I was vehemently apposed to all turn based games as a kid (aside from pokemon of course, that didn't count for some reason), but as I've gotten older I've realized turn based games are perfectly fine. I think the thing that turned me off from them was the high random encounter rate and no way to mitigate that

FF8 was fineI guess. Turn based games are a pretty wide range of quality though. There is so much that can determine a “turn” and so many things that can be done with the format that trying to throw a blanket on every turn based game is a bit much. Overall I love building a good team and hate it when I have to depend on the AI to do it right. Turn based games more often let you control every team member so I like a lot of those kinds of games.
Grandia Xtreme is still one of my favorite turn based games, even if the game as a whole was pretty low quality. Just throwing that out there.

I think the worst thing about XIII is for how long it dragged along with sequel after sequel. It's just a five year long blank in my head with Lightning plastered all over it when I think about FF and nothing else, and you can even make it ten years if you make it about FNC instead, because even XV is a direct result of it
I don't know which I would dislike more if both VIII and XIII were single games detached from everything, but all I know is that by the end of XIII I was saying "god, thank god I don't have to play this anymore, story had some cool moments though" and by the end of VIII I was saying "god, thank god I don't have to keep up with this stupid story anymore, though junctioning was a cool concept even if it didn't work so good in practice"

Disk 2 - Still pretty good.
Disk 3 - Game falls apart.
Disk 4 - Oh good, the Rinoa shit is over and the game gets good again. Only to end 5 hours later.
