What are your favorite FPS titles that don't get as much love as you feel they should? Games that are great entries in the genre but relatively unsung next to big names like Halo and Goldeneye and shit
Timesplitters is a more obvious one online, though I don't know many people that know it IRL. Both Soldier of Fortune 1 and 2 are great fun, never see them mentioned.
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is one of my favourites. It's in a weird spot where it's not milsim but it has really nice pseudo realistic shooting and a good campaign, it's the only single player game I've ever known to scratch that itch. There are mega mods that make it almost like single player arma too (obviously you can technically play arma on your own but you know what I mean)

The PC version was shitty compared to the console version. But I still enjoyed it
I only just played this for the first time a few months ago. I'd heard of it when it was released, but never played it. Which is a real shame because I would have loved the fuck out of if I'd played it at the time. I can't get used to the controls now though and it pains me.

I remember enjoying this game a lot. Knives and mechanical weapons were fun to use
Hell Hunt. t19games.itch.io/hellhunt The fucking map design is god-tier stuff. Also, I get this weird, weird feeling. I've noticed a lot of indie retro-style FPS games where you fight demons in recent memory. I have a headcanon that the Doomguy is inspiring people across the multiverse to do the thing

Its a good time for these sorts of shooters.

Timesplitters, the first one, lacks content and a proper solo, but was fun anyway. It had good shit like egyptian level and innsmouth level. Red Faction is an absolute classic, second one was recieved poorly but it was pretty good in multiplayer. Also, Unreal Championship 2 is a must play imo

Im looking to play a shooter but having a hard time finding exactly what I want. Would have these qualities >ammo isnt super scarce, managing it isn't a big part of the gameplay >doesnt have a specific mechanic for cover, but using walls as cover is still useful to avoid enemy fire >mostly focused on just shooting and getting through areas and levels, without a lot of stealth, other items or gimmicks Basically just looking for a streamlined, simply but satisfying FPS to play through. I liked the first few levels of return to castle wolfenstein but the rest of the game feels a bit more gimmicky. anyone have any recs for games that fit this criteria?

There's a new one called The Citadel, it's on Steam. Janky, but super fun.

Timesplitters seriously needs a rerelease.

Marathon, Marathon, Marathon. Gd I love this series.
Recently went back and played this and the sequel and they really aren't. They were held up by the story and voice acting which isn't anything special nowadays. The level design is generally pretty bad, the shooting sucks, and the stealth is awful. I finished the first game, but the 2nd game had such an annoying string of levels about halfway through that I had to drop it.

All Day Dying, whenever its posted it gets shit for being made by a guy from here but I really did like it a lot for how focused it was on just playing well and focusing on enemy management. It has a lot of similarities to racing. With that, even though it isn't an FPS I really also liked The Club for similar reasons, the way you learn each "lap" and get better over time is really satisfying for me, something that I also felt when doing when Timepslitters 2 campaign on Hard, you just winged it the first times and some tries later you had the entire level memorized so that you could reach the end of it with some health left. No way is anyone supposed to beat Atom Smasher on Hard on its first try.
Another one I really like even though its more around multiplayer is Day Of Infamy. You can just play with bots and it all feels so good. The way they manage themselves makes the level feel so much like an actual story mission in on of those more open ended objective games, like Frontlines Fuel of War (a game I also really enjoyed for its mission design), or Battlefield 2 Modern Combat (the console version, where you could jump around from soldier to soldier, amazing concept that never saw the light of day again)
