SEGA of America had the ideal marketing in place to compete with Nintendo, and SoA were also the ones that came up with bundling Sonic 1 with the Genesis. SEGA also had a stronger foothold in Europe before the Genesis anyway, what with the Master System being pretty popular over there. MJ being a cultural icon and a SEGAchad might've influenced some people but he wasn't super publicly involved with them. He was uncredited as a composer on Sonic 3, had the Moonwalker game, and appeared in Space Channel 5, that's about it. If he made a bigger deal out of working with SEGA, they honestly might have lived longer as a console manufacturer.

Also MJ was innocent. Fuck pedophiles, he was probably framed by some real ones.

If you want (((my))) explanation as to why this might be the case, it's because Jews are disproportionately represented in high-ranking positions in the entertainment industry and white-collar jobs. Since people in power tend to take advantage of it, naturally you hear a lot about people like Bernie Madoff and Jeffrey Epstein who do fucked-up stuff. But at the same time, there's plenty of non-Jews in these positions who commit crimes.
It's really more of a power thing than a racial thing.

Sonic was the first 2D platform game where you control a fast character. This was revolutionary and loved at the time, on the year 1991. I personally love Sonic because he is radical and fast and egocentric attitude.

Sega just hardcore marketed the shit out of Sonic in the early 90s with several cartoons, comics, and lots of merchandising/commercial tie-ins. Sega's aggressive console warring and positioning Sonic as the "cool anti-Mario" helped solidify Sega as a prominent video game company in the 90s and made Sonic a cultural icon.
