It's a decently fun game with a nice setting where I get to play pretend that I'm a bad ass witcher in a dark fairy tale world. I'd say it's worthy of praise simply because there's nothing else really like the witcher series in the gaming world.

I'm a narrative cuck, open world games piss me off to the point of distraction if you have some kind of clear urgent goal, a path to it, and no justification for why your character can or does just fuck off and do whatever they want.
It's why I enjoyed breath of the wild more, despite being a more barren world, everything you do in the game is justified as gathering power for the final battle, even dicking around helping villagers to get rupies. They may have been worthless in terms of game mechanics, but narratively it's Link building up resources. I appreciated that.

This is what made me love 2 and hate 3. In 2 all the side quests feel like natural stuff you run into on the path of a bigger quest, sometimes running parallel through multiple chapters/zones. In 3 it feels like a map and a checklist

Most statements about game quality tend to be subjective, but I do think people with more interest in arguing than I would have a very easy time arguing that Witcher 3's world is less gamey than the majority of its competition.
