Can we please talk about this game?

Hard to find a realistic opinions since the internet is filled with shit.
What are some of the problems with this game?
Is it even worth playing?

There is more freedom than 13. it feels cheaper somehow. If you like JRPGs its worth it.

I'd say mechanically it's superior to the first one in every regard, but I hate the taming monsters part so much. It just creates this vacuum of a potential third character.

It's worse than XIII but braindead circlejerking retards think it's automatically good because it's "opened up" compared to XIII.

>ending of XIII immediately retconned
>time travel retardation which is stupid in entertainment stories 99.9% of the time and is the case here
>similar combat which is a good thing but WORSE because they replace third party member with a pseudo pokemon system where only a few are viable
>boring basic generic protags and antags

Don't listen to any idiot that says XIII sucks but XIII-2 is good. They are literally just serahcoomers and/or are tricked just because it's not linear.

fuck off already

It’s okay. For some steps forward, it takes a few backwards. The inclusion of commando options is good but the take away from character customization makes trying to get better scores not as fun, since it now mostly depends on party composition, and the DLC characters are a weight above the in-game members. And the crystarium is now super confusing and a pain in the butt if you ever try to min-max. Story-wise, it’s not as good as 13, since the original was more self-contained, but it’s passable. Serah and Noel doesn’t have as much personality as the original cast but they’re earnest in what they’re looking for. Caius makes for a pretty good villain, operating form the shadows with ties to Noel, and Lightning is really elevated to “waifu goddess” tier as this celestial being yiu’fe constantly striving for. If you enjoyed 13, you’ll enjoy this one, with the glimpse into the future of the parties pretty cool as fan service goes, but the lack of half the party is pretty glaring. Overall, I’d give it a high 7/10.

Like Lightning Returns, it was probably made with a smaller budget but moves towards fixing the 'issues' which are said to make the first entry a bad game. If you liked the first one enough to finish it, then you'll probably enjoy this one a little more. The battle system is kept the same, and tuned to be a little more fluent and responsive. The game is based around means of time travel to revisit many areas which show up in the first game, but are now under new circumstances which can change depending on the 'year'.

Personally, I didn't like this so much as it makes everything feel a little recycled and re-skinned without introducing much in the way of new content. It comes across as more or less a forced design choice after the amount of criticism the first game received for its linearity. Because Lightning Returns is a good game, I'd suggest playing through FFXIII-2 anyway just so you can get the full experience. I think it's a good trilogy, but enjoyment here is very subjective and you're better off just relying on what you personally get from the game rather than listening to the reviews.

13 > 13-2 >>> dogshit > lightning returns majoras's mask but bad edition

It is unironically one of the best FF games since the PS1 days. Not joking one bit.

Loved the gameplay, loved the story, loved the monster taming element. Superb OST. It's an all around improvement from OG XIII in everything but the cast.

I'd play it just because the OST is godlike.

Honest opinion here: The game is fine. Is still pretty to look at, the combat has improved (and combat was already a strong point in the original), there are plenty of cool set pieces, and the OST goes from good to amazing sometimes. Is a perfectly competent JRPG, the story is nonsense but again... JRPG.

Two problems though. The time traveling stuff doesn't live up to it's potential, and it's mostly an excuse to reuse levels, but it's mostly optional stuff, so if you only play the main story is not that bothersome. But then there is the story. IF you came out as a fan of the original (which I mean, fans of the original ARE the target audience), the plot of this game is pure facfiction that directly retcons the original ending (not even joking, a divine retcon is a main plot point), gives you a mostly boring party (yes, the original one was annoying, but I take that over boring), and you just go from mostly disconnected plotlines to figure out the new storyline that in all honestly is only more confusing the more familiar you are with the original game. The only improvement is that now we have a decent villain... actually a very good villain if I am honest.

But yeah, as a GAME is a competent one, with some highlights, but it's story is either nonsensical or at the very least infuriating as a sequel, and the reuse of levels can get tiresome.

Music is GOD tier

RIP ORIGA

I agree with this post. Besides that, the production value is much lower than XIII's.
However, it's still a good game on its own, and worth playing imo.

also this

>SYN and SAB have skewed reward balancing. SYN effects were less powerful than SAB effects in XIII because buffs are guaranteed and debuffs take time to apply. In XIII-2, SYN effects are stronger than SAB effects, rendering SAB a near waste of time outside of extremely underleveled play, and specific fights.
>MED was rebalanced for the lower HP values of the game, but not Potions, making MED inferior to Potions for the entire game (unlike XIII, where Potions drop off after the early game unless extremely underleveled).
>The way En-spells are incredibly hard to get in SYN (being monster-exclusive) makes COM much harder to justify in most fights, as elemental weakness exploitation in RAV almost entirely overcomes the COM's passive damage boost.
>The overall game was balanced for much, much, MUCH lower damage multiplication and mitigation on normal enemies making them incredibly easy and repetitive even in optimal play which in turn makes SEN barely useful outside of specific boss fights unlike XIII where only extremely unoptimal play lead to repetitive normal enemies
Let's not even go into the monster system

Iono man I peaced out before finishing 13. Least favorite ff

I finished 13 couple of years ago. Is it worth it to play -2 and -3?

Man, I played one after the other, and at first I did though that they looked about the same in quality, if anything with 2 seemend less inspired for most levels... but then I reach Oerba and I could feel the downgrade!

Still, is good looking game for the time, and of course the levels are more interactive even if the recycled through timelines gets tiresome, but it's a solid game even today. I do feel it would have fair better if it would have been it's own thing instead of a sequel though. They wouldn't have needed to change much even, they could still have it in the same universe, just a 100% new cast of character... which already is for the most part.

They are good games... story wise they are bad sequels if I am honest.

If you enjoy the combat in 13 and don't care for the story, sure, the combat improves, they have more content, some cool levels... they are perfectly fine games, even if Lighting's Return time limit gimmick isn't for everyone (I can barely take it If I am honest). But the story not only actively retcons the original... is also pure nonsense. It COULD work on it's own, but then the characters from the original and their storylines kind of crash with the new one. Caleous is a far better villain though.

Perfectly said. It's a passable story on its own, but it becomes terrible by using the wrong characters and being a sequel to a very contained game instead of its own thing.
The game does look good, and the resolution/fps upgrade of the PC version makes it better. I feel it benefits from it way more than XIII.

These are the type of retards that make me irrationally hate the game

This guy knows what's up better than anyone here.

My take.
>Story: worse than 13 but playable. It's bad, like written by 14 yo girl bad.
>Setting: worse than 13, but lots of recycled areas so you replay them
>Characters: Serah is hot. That's it.
>Music: excellent
>production value: worse than 13
>Gameplay: fun. You can make it really difficult and challenging, or break the game and make it stupid easy. Or not think at all and basically skate through the story braindead style. It gives different experiences if you want

Overall the game really good for a jrpg

>What are some of the problems with this game?
it's a sequel to XIII

The OST is the only production party I didn't feel a quality drop from XIII. Really good songs overall.

I liked it more than 13 but I have to admit that it feels cheaper because it is a direct sequel to a mainline game. It isn't as ridiculous as ffx-2 but you notice that it isn't a mainline game.
But I liked that it didn't take itself as serious as the first game.
It is more open and it is actually fun discovering everything on a map.
The soundtrack is very unique but there is a lot of singing, in case you don't like it.
The graphics look a bit worse because this time they had multiplatform in mind from the beginning but it does run better on the ps3(However, if you have an xbox one x, it runs better there with their emulation)
And the person who said people who prefer xiii-2 over xiii are "serahcoomers" is dumb because I didn't even like serah in the first game.
If you love time travel stories, this is actually a must have and the whole story can actually be very mysterious based on certain cutscenes.

How can you break the game?

and COM-buffered -ga spells

Well, it made battle system from 13 better, mainly because animations are super short now when changing paradigms.
Its pretty non linear which is a welcome change after 13, but it feels like a mess, like they took random locations that didnt made it before and glued them together with a story that is honestly not very good. And you only get two characters in your party (and one monster, kinda pokemon vibes). Its not a game you cant enjoy but nothing that will make your mind explode either

yeah didn't they say they had so much cut content from 13-1 that it was enough for a second game?

I completed it and accidentally got the platinum trophy because I wanted to see the "secret ending" (this was before 13-3 was announced) and when it turned out to be another shitty sequel hook I got pissed off.

I think I only tolerated it to the end because I enjoyed collecting monsters.

Some looked cute

Indeed. I think if 13 contained story and ideas from all three games somewhat compressed and polished it could be a really good. Linear at first, then open and at the end that weird time shit. I think it would work really well
