In many cases, these frantically crazed people are driven to the very edge of madness by their own fear. Their actions revolve around attempting to resolve or defeat the fear, so much that it eventually consumes their whole mind. They become nothing but fear. Flat earthers and other hoax worshipers can come from this, seeking antagonists in higher powers to create an explanation for existential fears of death and the unknown.

it appears this man feared his wife's death, and rather than losing her (and she was probably the only thing he cared about anymore) he decided that he would go out with her. In his mind, I bet he thought he was doing her a kindness to end her suffering AND be there for her on the other side. It would double to end any of his own suffering.
