I think so. If hypothetically they went away next gen would you still play?
Did trophies/achievements ruin video games?
well those kinda replaced cheat codes and maybe some unlocks like skins or whatever for example because it's more profitable to sell those to you as dlc.
otherwise dunno what it ruined
Well maybe ruin is not the right word to use. It's rare for me these days to say I 100% enjoyed playing a game. I'm looking forward to next gen but i'm not as hyped as I used to be. I feel like the decline started around the time trophies and stuff like that came out. Maybe its just me.
I really dislike them. It forces you to play the game a certain way. Also the feeling of exploration and discovery is stamped out because you need to use a guide just so you get 100% so you don't feel like you missed out.
No they just change the mindset of modern gaymans to a negative and now i hate every modern gaymer.
It entirely depends on the game.
I think they're really enjoyable for roguelikes. FTL or Enter the Gungeon benefit tremendously.
Highly repetitive multiplayer games too. Team Fortress 2 has superb achievements (except for the social media related shit).
Achievements in story driven games, or tied to branching path narratives, are retarded.
going after achievements completely ruin any sort of mystery the game had, you just have a list of things to do in the game and once it's filled you feel like you got everything from the game.
OK, how about these questions. If you Platinumd a game or 100% the achievements would you continue to play it? Do you think these things are more of an endorphin that makes you feel like you are progressing? Do you care if your friend has more Plats than you do? Sorry for all the questions I just like hearing everyone's thoughts. No ones is right or wrong in this, just bored at work.
Yes it does. They created a new form of autism, just look at PSN trophy hunters. That's pathetic and sad.
Nothing to do with achievements but lots of games aren't very replayable these days. At least for me. It's like you've longer games because they have to pad it out and because of that you probably don't want to replay it.
It's just not easy to pick up and play games. A lot of not even that old games you can finish in 3-4 hours. Somehow makes it easier to pick up again instead of going through 15-20 padded game with million mechanics showed in and lots of story because people want that.
i don't even pay attention to them
I don't like them since they break immersion for me. I don't mind if they're not intrusive.
no
out of all the things to complain about it's something completionists go googoo eyed over?
the only game I platined was gravity rush because it was really fun and at the end I had almost all achievements already. Maybe achievements can serve as this endorphin for playing once but many games make you beat it more than once and that's annoying, and I don't feel like I'm progressing if I have to start the game over again to get one thing.
I have a friend that cares about platinums and sometimes he complains about the frustrating things he had to go through to get an achievement. I couldn't care less about it but games now are so easy that adding this extra challenge for players that want to get more out of the game is a nice thing.
I play games I like and try to go for all the trophies in them. I like trophies and getting plats. What of it
maybe if achievements were removed, IOI would focus on making more levels for their games instead of shoehorning ways to easily kill your targets
here's the example i remember best:
>play sapienza
>right as the game loads, there's a guy talking about being the psychologist of a target
>he goes back and forth in the same pattern sipping his infinite cup of coffee then hanging over a bridge
>poison his cup of coffee
>he goes to puke alone in a bathroom
>there's a giant fucking crate in a bathroom for no fucking reason other than to dump his unconscious body
>go to the mansion where the target is
>you're literally fucking handheld to his own room away from every other npc
>WOAH THERE'S A CHIEVO FOR SMOTHERING HIM WITH A PILLOW
>WOAH I HAVE TO PLAY A SECOND TIME CAUSE THERE'S *ANOTHER* CHIEVO FOR SHOOTING HIM IN THE HEAD
No that's totally cool, I shouldn't have used the word ruin, I personally don't care for them. Just wanted to see how others felt. If you enjoy them more power to you!
addendum, they're not technically achievements that pop up on your steam/psn/live, they're ingame tasks or quests or whatever their name was
I remember purchasing one of the Final Fantasy games on steam. I think it was V and VI. Literally as soon as you boot up the game, Achievement POPS UP. THANK YOU FOR BUYING GAME HERE TROPHY.....I'm like...uhhh ok thanks? hmmm
The issue I have with those types are like...what if you dont even finish it? That trophy will always be there taunting you. That's more of me being a OCD retard than anything else but I'm sure others feel the same
They're shit but I don't think they ruin a video game as you can simply ignore them.
yakuza games also have a "Thank You!" trophy, but it's unlocked after completing the main story, so at least it's a thank you for actually playing
Based and redpilled.
Maj'Eyal benefits a lot from achievements.
It’s absolutely depressing. It just encourages people to take it up the ass so that can get a special certificate saying they took it up the ass.
That's definitely not as bad since you would have to beat it. Think of GTA 4, Off the Boat. Watch a cut scene lol haven't even moved your character yet. I know there are waaaay worse things out there in games than Trophies like Loot boxes, DLC, whatever else. But I do feel like all these started to decline right around the time trophies/achievements came. Just my opinion
I enjoy the games that took a piss on it like Deadpool, Portal 2, Saints row 3 and others
I also enjoy the sports titles that have 0 point leaver and quiter achievements branding your scummy nature to the account forever
even if you don't get any trophies the game is still on the list. pretty sure that it's unremovable if it's synced. tried years ago on cfw ps3 to get rid of all trophies. it just fucked up the whole trophy system.
Would be nice if they added a feature to disabled them or hide them. Hell I think steam has that option right? Might be wrong on that.
nah on steam you can't even turn off the achievement notifications without disabling steam overlay all together
remember when trophy hunts in videogames would reward you
>remember secrets in old fps
>remember hidden packages in gta
>remember tf2 milestones
>remember yakuza substories
>remember dead rising survivors like otis' friend and that one psychopath that gives you molotovs for free
I still can't understand playing a game just to have a meaningless message pop up with a meaningless score.
