It's the most logical place to put the jump button, pressing up should make you go up.

up is for ladders and such

jumping deserves it's own button independent of the movement controls

do europeans still do this?

Yeah pretty much. Aside from Castlevania most games give you a fair bit of leeway to change direction when you jump, or at least just let you jump to either side. So it's best to have them directional pad and the jump button separate.

Pressing up to go up when you're flying make sense but you're not really jumping there are you?

It does mean the up button booking gets use for practically nothing in side scroller though. I know in a lot of games you do a ground pound when you press down mid jump. I can't think of any that having special moves when you press up.

What other button would you use in a fighting game where every button is normally assigned to an attack or other function? Clicking the left stick?

Why does Minecraft do this?

fucking minecraft

FUCK games that have L3 as the run button. It always makes me feel like the analog is going to snap when I have to tilt it while clicked in for a substantial amount of time
