I don't know

modern games are more streamlined and fun with less time walking around and staring at a minimap

>with less time walking around and staring at a minimap
Doom, Quake, and Build games don't have a minimap, mate

smartphones happened

You let women in your hobby and they corrupted it all the way up.

Whatever you say, zoomie.

System Shock went too far.

I don't know but neither look fun.

SOUL

How so?

Whoever made that image is coping hard

broader audience means broader adaptation to difficulty and design. Average joe gets frustrated when he has to walk around and explore a level(unless its an le epin ubi soft open world diversity experience!!).

The only one coping is (You)

consoles

unironically THIS

Aren't you exaggerating honey? All I miss from "back in the day" is manuals. I loved reading them before hoping into the game and I would love to blame zooomers inability to read but the reality is that games can be too robust these days for a manual. It's more practical to have them integrated in your game or let the community discover things by itself and post results in "muh YT channel"

Sad but true.

I know a bit about what you're talking about but I literally forgot what exactly happened. I do remember having to go into one of the maze areas on maintenance to find some sort of box with a set of numbers and I think it was a part of ejecting the beta grove but I remember needing a guide for it. that and getting to the security deck when you find the elevator to it locked

women and minorities getting introduced to gaming

>modern games are more streamlined and fun with less time walking around and staring at a minimap

But staring at a minimap and/or compass is all you *do* in modern games, user. You can't even turn them off because objectives are hidden in idiotic places that you can't possibly guess unless you turn map markers/the compass/the minimap on.

consoles are the reason a game like the one depicted on the left side could not be developed in the first place
after the video game crash of the 80s the industry needed home consoles to resurface, without that burst of money from the consoles in the late 80s, there would be no 90s videogames

I don't get the map on the right. If MC is going from top to bottom, then the first turn is a left turn

Consoles, gamepads, and real stupid playtesters and dumb customers: You don’t need to have actual level design in your game to sell, just pretty arenas.

>real stupid playtesters
It's mainly this.

Isn't Misri Halek actually kind of linear?

No, in practice it was reasonable.
