The ergonomics was better due to the more squared off shape. And the game library was incredibly good, bringing back the first 3d pokemon since gamecube

The New 3DS (non-XL) is pretty spot on. too bad they don't make them anymore, I'd get one. Though I've come to like how the XL fits in my hands, it's the least hand crampy handheld I've ever owned
