You can play the first one, it's short. Avoid the second one, the third one is a prequel but it's important story wise. The fourth one introduces Nero, but half of the game are the same levels. If you want to play 4 as soon as possible, I'll say play 1, skip 2, and watch the story of 3 and 4 on Youtube or something like that.

Depends how much you care about the story, it very much calls back to the rest of the series (besides 2 because fuck 2) and you won't appreciate certain twists and plot developments
But if you don't care about that then you can still follow what's going on, it isn't particularly convoluted and like has been said already there's a recap video that goes over the plot of the series
Regardless, play the rest of the games you turboqueer, 1 and 3 are amazing and 4 is pretty good, avoid 2 unless youve got the hd collection and are curious.
DmC is a pretty fun spinoff that does have its moments but it's not as good as the main series at all, has absolutely nothing to do with it and the story is aids

Like if i say "Can i play Final Fantasy 7 without playing 1-6?" you don't say "no you HAVE to play them all" because they're independent games, but someone who doesn't know much about FF might not know that. It's the same for any series (especially japanese ones). The only way to find out the answer is to do research into the series, one method for which is to ask people more knowledgeable about it than yourself.

The HD Collection and 4SE are available on every platform that can play DMC5, so it's not like there would be any difficulty acquiring the games.
