I'm currently playing Axiom Verge and it's pretty decent. It's exactly what I expected however so no real surprises.
Blasphemous is pretty good if you like grimdark
WOLFENdoom
I've played this game on release, combat was solid but plataforming almost made me poke my eyes. I've been considering replaying it since the DLC got released, but I've heard that for some reason its only available on NG+, is that true?
That's correct. You get to NG+, beat the tutorial boss then go through the second area and a hidden path will appear to the dlc area. I dunno why they opted to do it this way but it's free content so whatever
>Metroidvania thread
>since SoTN gave borth to the genre there was like 4 max proper metroidvanias that adhere to all features and requirements of the thalon
Thread ended quickly
Doesn't make sense indeed, and how's the plataforming? Did they they actually improved it or is it still clunky as fuck?
>Axiom Verge
>I heard good things about risk of rain 2
>Wizards of legend
>20xx
This is a good one.
Bruteforced myself through this game. It tried to be 2D Dark Souls but without any "soul". Not a single remarkable location, npc, boss, enemy or whatever, its was just bland to me.
Bloodstained if you haven't gotten around to it yet. It's the closest thing to a new Castlevania we'll ever get, and Miriam is cute. And I'm not just saying that from a coomer perspective, she's legitimately charming and playful and peppy, which isn't what I expected when I first saw her design.
Play the Messenger. It has an incredible twist and gimmick that makes it really fun plus the writing is top notch. Avoid watching trailers as they spoiler some late game stuff
I dunno I never personally had too much of an issue with it. It starts out really clunky of course but you do get upgrades that improve your general mobility later on. Check some vids on youtube of later game areas and you'll see what I mean.
2 and 3 are roguelites, not metroidvanias.
>SoTN gave borth to the genre
bait
Hollow Knight for good world building and atmosphere
Ori 2 for fun movement and amazing visuals
Rabi Ribi for great combat
Environmental Station Alpha for finding secrets
Good lord, I hate Axiom Verge so fucking much. Every single boss in that game is a trainwreck with the final one being the worst boss I've ever had to defeat in a game. I hope you're playing on normal, otherwise get ready to just tank the hits on that piece of shit.
Risk of rain 2 and Wizard of legend are roguelites. Still great games though.
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
Don't let its kiddy outward appearance fool you. It's easily the most underrated metroidvania of this generation.

deedlit in wonder labyrinth, though it's in early access and really short currently
I think you should try it again user, i heard the devs fixed some platforming issues it's still rough though but nowhere as bad it was at release.
>butter gave birth to sandwich before bread even was born
>"muh food analogy!"
you really dont play axiom verge for the bosses though, the game truly shines in exploration with some really fucking cool secrets and a bunch of stuff to find. The bosses are mostly gimmicks that you figure out by choosing the right weapons from the enormous amount you find along the way. Youre not getting hollow knight or valdis story combat here obviously, but the exploration in it is better than both of those combined.
The Messenger isn't perfect, but I really enjoyed it.
This was my first Metroidvania actually, and since I loved it I got motivated to play the classic Igavanias, Hollow Knight and Ori. And yes Miriam is a cute and must be protected at all costs, but I still wish I could play as Dominique cuz big tiddie blonde nun is prime coomer design.
Rain world
>I still wish I could play as Dominique cuz big tiddie blonde nun is prime coomer design
Well if you're up to try out a classicvania style game, she's playable in Curse of the Moon 2 with an even better design.
I just can't into game with character swapping. It always feels like the gameplay is purposefully hampered.
any good megaman metroidvania?
i just finished X5 and X6 and i want more megaman games
They upgrated it a little, by giving you more control over the character, and some issues like getting instakilled by trying to jump over some spikes was fixed.
No
As for combat, saying "you don't play game X for element Y" is a retarded statement, since element Y is still in the game and is still bad. Also, the bosses are not just gimmicky, they have one or two attacks that they repeat over and over. The scorpion boss is literally defeated by sitting, shooting and jumping over an occasional projectile. And that takes multiple minutes.
For exploration, I'll give it to you that it does it ok. There certainly are good secrets and the core movement is not shit like Super Metroid so walking around and finding them is fun. Something that helps the game are the admittedly unique powerups, which make for some good secrets. Either way, I wouldn't say that Axiom Verge does exploration better than Hollow Knight (never heard of valdis story), because the overall atmosphere in HK is better, but that is just my opinion. In my opinion, Ori and maybe even Rabi ribi had more interesting minor powerup secrets, while games like La Mulana 2 and Environmental station are had better grand secrets. HK and Verge just kinda did them either as mini challenges or find secret walls type.
How are you supposed to figure out some of the secrets? I remember someone telling me about the text code needed to get the flamethrower years ago, are there actually hints for this stuff in the game?
Play X4.
But answering your question there is ZX and ZX Advent.
