I hate it because I only do one playthrough of the levels. No reloads, no savescumming. If (when) I fuck up, I just roll with it and try to stay alive. It's a lot of fun, and it's also fucking ruined by having to replay the same level twenty times to unlock a sniper rifle.

You can probably still get full mastery in 4-5 runs of any given map.
The mastery system rewards you for doing something differently, not repeating the same tactic even if executed perfectly. For example, the first time you get SA ranking it gives you a pretty nice reward for unlocking that challenge, the second time you do that, there is no reward since you've already unlocked that challenge.
Variety is the key, doing the map with a poison kill, accident kill, sniper kill etc. Will give you more xp
