What does Zig Forums think of early fps games?
charming
based for the most part
They were the peak of the genre.
I first played Wolfenstein 3D when I was 4 years old on my Dad's old MS DOS computer. I'd watch him play most of the time because I'd start crying when BJ's face got all bloody in the HUD. I eventually fell in love with that game and the genre right there. Still remember my Dad getting me Return to Castle Wolfenstein for Christmas in 2001 and how happy I was.
/vfps/ when?
they're great
quake 1 and duke nukem 3d are my favorites
Absolutely dense, thick with atmosphere and soul.
Exquisite.
Is good
love em.
Most hold up extremely well despite their age not Wolf3d
Marathon is genuinely one of my favorite games of all time.
stop with that endless splittering of Zig Forums meme.
Just go to /vr/ if you want a secret club.
I like the metroidvania-lite progression in them. Finding that key card or unlocking a shortcut by blowing up a wall or finding an RPG early was so satisfying. Secrets were great. I miss DN3D, why wasn't Forever like that.
Some badly need updates like Brutal Doom, others, like Douk 3d and Shadow Warrior just need a proper re-release that isnt based on DOS emulation.
My earliest FPS was Counter Strike 1.1 and it wasn't all that different to current FPS
The only good (mainstream) FPSs. one can hope we get back there some day.
GET OFF MY TRAIN
I was always too scared to play the space station level in Duke, too many hard shadows and flying lizard men that scared me, so I always played with god mode on
I've actually been delving into old fps since i tried playing Doom Eternal but my PC can't run it at a stable 60 fps
I've downloaded Doom 1 & 2, Quake 1 and Dusk, interested in buying The Citadel too since it's recent and has good feedback.
I've been enjoying all of them, are there any others i should check out ?
Amid Evil and Dusk
Pretty fun, but I can't play them for too long at a time or I get bored. Played Ultimate Doom, Duke 3D and Shadow Warrior so far. Will probably work through Doom II and then the Duke and Shadow Warrior episodes when I feel like it.
very cool, also tons of content thanks to their autistic mapmaking communities
Duke 3D is a must. Get Megaton edition, don't buy World Tour.
Heartily recommend Blood but not Blood II
Doom and Heretic are incredible. Hexen is basically Heretic but you get fewer weapons so I don't know why everyone thinks it's a thousand times better. Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior are good but not my favorites. Wolfenstein 3D is okay.
Blood was pretty amazing but I played it on DOSBox which means I played it with awful mouse aiming (and bMouse helps if I remember correctly but doesn't make it like a modern game; it's still janky and fucked up). I haven't played the remake.
As for modern old-school-style shooters, I almost want to hate them for being fake retro shit for zoomers pretending to be boomers, but Dusk and Amid Evil actually really good.
overrated garbage for the most part
The gave me a headache for some reason, modern FPS don't.
mod the fuck out of doom II. no one told me about id, brtual doom, russian overkill, hdoom, moonman, trump doom, and so many more are fucking amazing. if your playing it with gzdoom you just drag and drop the the zips onto the launcher.
>I almost want to hate them for being fake retro shit for zoomers pretending to be boomers
Felt that way about that recent Quake clone with the le edgy doomnukem protag. When the trailer said "NO GLORY SHITS" I just turned it off and moved on. I bought The Citadel instead and I'm enjoying it a lot. It has some personality of its own instead of just being "fuck modern fps aren't old school so cool" and I'm pleasantly surprised at how much fun it is. Reminds me of Strife and Demonsteele mixed with some guro anime body horror aesthetics. It came out a few weeks ago about the same time as the other game but I can't even remember what the other game's name is anymore.
Also, Heretic is way better than Hexen and I think better than Doom 2.
Doom 64
Duke Nukem 3D
BLOOD
Shadow Warrior (1997)
Quake 2
Half-Life 1-2 + expansions
Heretic + Hexen
Serious Sam TFE, TSE, BFE
Unreal
Return to castle Wolfenstein
based list
strangehold gives me nauseas every time i tried playing it , its the only game that caused me anything weird , dropped it halfway when i got bored of getting nauseas
it was boring anyway
I loved the Amiga Doom clones, there was such a massive glut of those games
Every week there was a new Doom to play
>being this fucking retarded contrarian
Why fps fags are so braindead
Fun for sure. My 1st fps was perfect dark but i've played them all. Hexen, heretic, marathon, doom, blood, shooters are my thing. I even like call of duty.
>people are making doom clones again
>still no deus ex clones
Pretty much this. Proper first person shooters didn't really exist before until Halo 2 or 3. Before those, it was more like really dog shit trial and error, mostly error.
>until
>gaylo
>2 weapon limit and regenerating health
Kys
I know this is bait, but you still made me reply. Fuck off.
don't argue with underages
Because all you need for a doom clone is decent gunplay, an interesting arsenal, and good monsters to blow up.
For dude sex you need all kinds of contingencies because you've got a big tool kit and inter-dependencies.
whenever one of them comes out, people tear them to shreds for not being the literal second coming of christ (dishonored, mankind divided, prey, etc.)
Unironically i'd say Quake 2 or Half Life is when shooters stopped being shit.
>every month more Quake maps come out and my backlog gets even bigger
>mfw
>Hexen is basically Heretic but you get fewer weapons so I don't know why everyone thinks it's a thousand times better.
Because Hexen doesn't play like a Doom reskin.
>FEAR
>3 weapon limit
OHMYGOD!!
They're some of the best.
DIdn't age well.
golden age of fps is 1998 to 2007.
>Doom reskin.
But this isn't a bad thing. Doom was fun, and Doom with a fantasy skin is also fun.
Are we allowed to admit that Ion Fury is a great game, or are we still pretending to be upset at it?
Pretty sure the Zig Forums WAD for Doom comes with Moonman, Trump, and Zyklon Ben all in one. Not sure why you decided to mention them separately. Also, half your WAD list is retard meme shit and one coomer mod. Makes you sound retarded.
>1998
quake 1 was 1996 and it aged way better than any build engine shite
>BombshellFART1.jpg
>Bombshell FART
And?
>Wojak
Uebuvai nahui poka ya tebe v ebalo ne nasral vyblyadok tupoi
Your pic related is literally just a chainsaw. I don't hate Heretic, I just think that it's not different enough from Doom to warrant a playthrough. If I wanted more Doom I would just play Doom with any of the megawads available.
Ya, I tend to do that when I name files for the observant people out there.
HOLY HELL YOU'RE ACTUALLY COPING
Quake 1 laid the groundwork for good fps and what good shooting should feel and look like, but it's still held back by the jank and poor design decisions (that is to say, a total lack of any kind of coherent design whatsoever) of the early 90's. You can say that's part of their charm, but charm is a crutch for bad fundamentals.
You name all your images after farts?
Ion Fury is amazing, the only part i didn't like was the final boss, but other than that every second I spent playing it was awesome.
Taki zahotel govna sebe na ebalo. Shtoje ne budu tebe meshat'
Prinimai tuguy stryu pinosa na svoi tuporului ebalinik, dolboeb.
I don't think they're bad but usually halfway through the second episode I'm starting to just want it to be over with. I appreciate a game having a lot of content but after a while it starts to just kind of drag on a bit. Maybe it's due to the simplicity of the weapons that you spend most of your time using.
What jank does Quake have? The movement is ridiculously fluid, enemies are less braindead than Doom, and the level design is so streamlined you don't even need a +use key. And "a total lack of any kind of coherent design whatsoever" is one heck of a blanket statement.
I gotta admit, it takes balls to enter a fps thread and say that quake has bad fundamentals
>literally just a chainsaw
Well, I was agreeing that Heretic is practically a reskin of Doom, so yeah.
But actually, now that I think about it, the chainsaw in Doom doesn't get increased range and life-leeching ability when powered up. That probably has something to do with the fact that Doom doesn't have the equivalent of Heretic's Tome of Power. In fact, Doom doesn't have usable items at all. Items are a pretty significant aspect of Heretic's gameplay and they don't come from Doom at all.
Moreover, vanilla Heretic had vertical mouse aim while vanilla Doom did not.
So I was agreeing that Heretic is practically a reskin of Doom, but now I've changed my mind. Thanks for reminding me how different and how much better Heretic is.
Duke has a lot of absolutely cancerous level design, but Doom, Heretic and Hexxen are the peak of the genre.
What's the best way to play Marathon? Last time I played with Aleph One the mouse aim was off but that was like 10 years ago
