How the fuck am I meant to play this class? I really like his idea but in execution he's fucking shit.
I constantly get trickstabbed and shit by spies but when I try to put their techniques into practice I get nowhere. It's even as extreme as sometimes I stab someone in the back and it counts as a poke. Do most spies have backtracking software? Because sometimes I'm looking at a spy and he back stabs me. What the fuck.
Server updates player's positions with a slight delay by default. What you see is not what the servers see in real time. What you saw the player stabbing you in the face was actually a backstab based on what he sees. The trick stab relies on player's inate lag.
Carson Reed
>why am I so shitty as spy? Practice and git gud scrub. If it’s too hard, go pyro.
William Miller
I have practiced a lot with Spy and I just can't be a trickstabbing god because i always get pokes or once in a blue moon i'll get a facestab. yeah i understand this, but how do people manage to get consistent success? is it soley based on MS?
Noah Rogers
If you’re saying you’ve practiced a lot, that means you haven’t practiced enough. Just keep practicing and only play as spy.
Thomas Edwards
I try, but I only do good in servers where the enemy team are braindead and follow me up stairs and stuff. When I come up against a team that's even remotely good i get shut down in 2 seconds.
Aiden Jones
If you want to do trickstabs well, go to Hightower were all the retards play and practice on them.
Austin Jenkins
That's the thing with trickstabs montages. It only works on pubs and braindead players. Spy almost never flourishes in competitive matches.
Elijah Russell
Spies are pretty terrible and useless in public games They're great on organized teams as you literally are able to be invisble and scout things out The point of them in pub games is just to backstab heavies/medics/engineers/spies
Daniel Howard
It takes a bit of practice to get enough knowledge about the game to play Spy. First of all you need to learn map layout and the general paths teams take through the level. You should be cloaked when moving in a way that wouldn't be natural for the enemy team. Even seeing a teammate moving oddly for a moment is enough for people to check for a spy. I also would recommend running towards the enemy as little as possible. Flip around to check enemy positions and run backwards at them - it makes it look like you're retreating.
The backstab stuff takes a little while to get the general feel of when it will be successful. I think a lot of people who start off are way too overeager and try to stab the second they get close. Wait until the knife is completely raised, try to find the rhythm when stabbing multiple people - and even then sometimes you're just unlucky.
The only real answer is more practice, but playing as other classes will also help you understand map flow and player behavior. Just keep at it!
People have been successfully playing Spy for more than a decade, he isn't shit in execution, zoomer. You are.
Nathan Torres
>disguise as Scout >ARRRARARRRGGGH WHY SPY SHIT
Henry Watson
I don't rely on disguise I rely on waiting until the team is paying full attention to something else.
Aiden James
Never understood why the fuck people do that. It's literally the most obvious spy disguise.
Jonathan Perry
For the sake of efficiency, you should try to use your disguises. You're not going to have a good time if you're slowly slinking around waiting to get behind people.
What you should be doing, ideally, is only being cloaked when you're in a position or moving in a way that would make it obvious that you're a spy. You really just want to slip into a group of enemies as quickly as possible, get a few stabs, and get out. Your cloak is to get you into position and your disguise should be there to fool people for a few seconds until you can get your kills.
I think being a Sniper or a Medic arouses too much suspicion. Why would a Sniper be out here, and why isn't the Medic healing? Any other class with a difference in movement speed is off the list too.
The only thing with Pyro is that getting set on fire totally blows the disguise - but that would most likely happen with any other class.
I'd recommend always disguising as Pyro unless someone can make the case for a better choice.
I just get disheartened when I've been on cl_walkway for 30 minutes learning the backstab hitboxes and shit just to get stomped.
Jack Williams
Pyro is my go-to for disguise too, because the enemy team will usually depend on the pyro to check for spies.
Brayden Powell
Yeah but when you disguise as them you lose you 107% movement speed messing with your muscle memory. It's better to disguise as the medic with a medi gun out
Wyatt Williams
you're all retarded scout is the best disguise because his model is small and subtle and the scout as a class is not out of place anywhere on the map pyro is the worst because the flamethrower is huge and it is very conspicuous when a pyro isnt constantly flaming everything soldier disguise can usually get you a few kills, but people will wise up after a while demo is bad for the same reasons as pyro (he should always be attacking so he sticks out when hes not) heavy is too slow, engie and sniper are completely out of place on the front lines where all your picks are spy can work but people like to shoot spies if you're getting kill with the scout disguise its because you ran directly through the battlefield towards your targets exposed back and someone with at least 1 functioing brain cell saw you
Jack Sanchez
i have over 100 hours on spy, it depends how the enemy team plays If the enemy team is incompetent watching their backs (they play agressively) just go for it if the enemy team is playing passively try to play safely once you get the flow how spy plays, naturally your gamesense will be adapted
Julian Ward
forgot to add but medic is a mixed bag. on one hand, everyone is watching you and you stick out when you're not healing. on the other, people are naturally inclined to turn their backs to a medic in anticipation of healing
Camden Baker
I actually started playing TF2 on the 360 when it launched. I spent like a year learning how to play Spy with a controller on to then get the game on PC and had to start all over again.
This video might help illustrate what angles should cause a successful backstab. There's a sort of sweet spot you need to feel out.
I think it also helps to learn when you can expect an enemy to be distracted and then will start behaving predictably. Once an enemy gets to a chokepoint, chances are they'll be moving around a lot less and adjusting the way they're facing.
There really is no replacement for a general familiarity with the game and the only thing that'll help with that is practice.
But you're running at half speed and you can't double jump. If I see a Spy disguised as a Scout, regardless of how well he's blended in and behaving, I instantly see him doing his fucked up runcycle and know it's a Spy.
Ethan Torres
yeah but the best way to play spy is not to be seen at all. if i see someone who looks fishy i will spy check them.
Luis Bell
because disguising isnt for "blending in" and doing some hiding in plain sight shit 99% of the time disguising is for not getting raped by sentry guns and not being obviously a different colour from everyone else in the few seconds you uncloak as you're going for a backstab p.s use your gun. stock revolver is op
Gabriel Jones
even though im in the green i still get pokes thanks to how the server side sees them
Christopher Sanders
also scouts head model is very far away from spys head hitbox, making it harder to headshot if you dont have the hitbox memorized.
Xavier Moore
also allows you to look over boxes and stuff while completely concealed, since your disguised model is lower than your actual view point
Austin Howard
>and someone with at least 1 functioing brain cell saw you that's spies biggest counter .
Only time I've had success as Spy is either sapping shit when nobody's around or going in for the kill when the enemy is fighting so they can't hear me coming. Spy is a support class.
