Yeah it's different, takes some time to get used to the flatter look of it. It's not something that all people will love, but it is intentional by the creator.
I've warmed up to it a great deal.

The new design is better for readability, but it removes a lot of the character from the design, and like you said, makes it look much flatter. I honestly think they would have been better off going for a middle ground between the two styles instead of committing hard to one or the other.

For sure. I prefer the way HD looks too, but I think the hate for 2 is overblown. I don't think it looks bad, it just has a different look to the first game. I understand that it's slightly disappointing that a sequel comes out and it looks "worse" than the last game, but I feel like most people haven't gotten past that initial gut reaction of "this is different and flatter"
Once you accept that it is a different look, it no longer looks like shit.
