Over a decade later...

Over a decade later, and the original Halo trilogy is still the most interesting and immersive sci-fi setting in videogames. How did they do it? Why can't other developers get it right? Is this not a testament to the tremendous value that ACTUALLY GOOD writers have on videogames?

It was shit. Only Halo 1 had good writing, Halo 2 attempted to have better writing than Halo 1 but failed in execution so bad they had to shit out a third game full of filler and unnecessary lore. A Halo 2 - 3 Director's cut is the only way to save the shitshow of story.

It's been 16 years and Halo 2 still exists as the only good video game ever created. Maybe one day we'll get another one.

It's a testament to white men being in charge

>gaylo
Gtfo zoomer.

what the fuck

You played it as a kid so you think it's better than it really is.

Wrong.

Halo 1 and xbox was the first time my poor family got me a brand new toy. It has a special place in my heart

I never found Halo particularly interesting. MP is fun though, MCC and being able to jump between them is really fun.

Absolutely wrong. Im just now getting into halo and its amazing. Great gameplay, amazing graphics and music and an appealing style

>failed in execution so bad they had to shit out a third game full of filler and unnecessary lore
how?

Gaylo 1 was alright, 2 and 3 shit the bed. It's a hard pill to swallow, but Gaylo was never good to begin with.

You have to be completely fucking retarded to think Halo 3 has anything resembling good writing. Bungie themselves would consider you so.

>Most interesting immersive setting

Bruh, it is a straight rip of the space Marines from Aliens, like all other video game sci-fi from the 90/00s

Halo isn't just Aliens, this is absurdly reductionist

You are fucking retarded.

I’m moderately convinced these are trolls

Name a shooter with better writing

I still play Halo CE, 2 and 3 today. So damn good

Halo sure is a testament of how sci fi cliches can excuse bad gameplay

Careful, you'll attract that worthless zoomer Reachtard who thinks Halo CE had a """barebones""" story.

Man that just shows how bad games are now. Halo was absolutely mediocre when it released, especially gameplay wise.

The Master Chief side of Halo 2's campaign, taken in isolation, is probably the blandest single storyline in the Halo series. Arbiter's levels are what carried H2 storywise. Imagine my shock when Halo 3 released with no Arbiter and had a shit story.

Music carries games more than is acknowledged. Even cinema (Disney specifically) refuses to accept how of a shortcut to the emotional core music is. Mute the warthog run in the more and it's dogshit. Mute the 2nd half of The Boss fight in MGS3 and it's shit. The music in Halo contributed so much to this idea that you're on this relic deserving of a religious awe. It played into the idea of discovery.
But that kind of leads me into the second point as to why Halo is shit now. Discovery. No question needs an answer so there's no drive for discovery. Outer Wilds is the best game of the year because it's DRIVEN on the urge to discover. The unknown will always be more interesting than the known.Halo doesn't have that G-Man forever unsanswered question and with 343's writing ability it never will. They could have possibly had it with ONI but they kind of already blew it with the new phase of spartans. The idea of a morally questionable means to a win in an unwinnable war is just a good idea to build off. If you betray and mutilate your species to survive is it even your species' claim to survival, or the monsters' that you created? Oh you just made them without the crimes against your own species? Well suddenly that goes out the window along with ONI's morally questionable link to the player. ONI is literally the Illuminati of Halo but gets swept up in the left over Bungie pitfall of having all the interesting lore be hidden in media outside of the games.
Bungie then goes on to make a new scifi series that does the exact same mistake. They don't even tell instead of show, they indirectly tell. They gesture you to where some one will tell.

Ultimately writing in video games isn't treated how it should be considering the money at stake. Compare the tv series industry and the video game industry income. Where should the high value writers go? Now where do they go instead because that industry has unions and rights and prestige.

lead developer and ceo was black

Halo: Combat Evolved wasn't mediocre at all when it released.

>DOOM
>ugly shit colors, everything looks the same, dark, mostly indoors, need to draw maps for yourself because it's too fucking repetitive

>Halo
>level design isn't as simple as this diagram suggests
>full range of colors in use, some dark and some bright, very distinct indoors and outdoors environments, some large and some small, easy to navigate while also having secrets to discover if you trail off the main path a bit, there's one level that sucks and it resembles DOOM the most out of all of them

This is so retarded it’s actually hard to find an overhead layout to compare it to but this is retardation

This is literally revisionist and gay

It's a great universe full of unexploited potential but it's all been squandered because they tried personifying a cardboard cutout of a player insert and they seem to get high off their own farts when writing for their new characters.

All of it SOILED.

It deserved to be the next Star Trek, or Mass Effect (1), or Warhammer, but they totally fucked it up beyond repair at this point. The writing was shit as far back as Halo 2, but Halo 3 was where it really went to shit. Reach was even worse and then fucking Halo Wars happened. Goddamn Halo Wars...
