/mlp/ worked because it was very very specific. If you posted an image that directly pertained to My Little Pony, you were banned, plain and simple. Zig Forums cross-pollinated because politics is a very universal subject that can pop up in almost any circumstance. It'd be absurd to ban someone on Zig Forums for talking about The West Wing, or on Zig Forums for talking about Crusader Kings, and on that principle Zig Forums was impossible to realistically contain. Any sort of containment board for Zig Forums would fail for the same reason, because any subject of containment would still be one or two degrees of separation from actual video game discussion.
