Chess is an OK game, entertainment-wise. It isn't nearly deep or rewarding enough to be considered entertainment on-par with modern games. Like says, it's too reliant on memorizing moves, supplemented by familiarity with a handful of tactics.

I'm sure it was a great game a thousand years ago, but countless modern games are better than chess.

The Atari 2600 game Video Chess takes an average time of 10 hours just to do one single move on the highest difficulty.

Also, it tends to cheat a lot by doing two moves at once, adding and removing pieces at will, and glitches out a lot.

I wonder if anybody beat this game on the highest difficulty...

Regardless plenty of games are tedious at top level play. That doesn't make them a bad game.
If classical games aren't your cup of tea any game under 30 minutes will get wild. There's simply too much to memorize and Grand Master's know what the others have specialized in.
