all video games are art. anything that gets specifically labeled as art usually just attracts people who don't care about gameplay and need their egos inflated by letting everyone know they appreciate "real art".

Yes! If a painting is destroyed does it mean it wasn't art before being destroyed? Heck there are games that intentionally corrupt themselves as part of the experience.

The people capable of making art don't want to, and the people that want to can only ape the most shallow aspects of other artistic platforms.

Art is just a meaningless buzzword for people to try to appeal to some external value of a game that they can't properly justify other than referring to some artificial set of principles that they think matter. It's the same set of magical principles people refer to when they talk about "themes" and shit of something they think has more merit than the outside would suggest when it really doesn't and that person is just grasping at magical straws that don't exist outside of their idealistic thinking.

Does it matter at this point? The word art is entirely meaningless. These days art is supposedly everything, which just makes it a synonym for everything.
It's basically the same as asking "does video games exist".

We need a new word for "creative works in a classical field that requires a medium amount of skill to produce", because that word is actually somewhat useful.
