Great game though, it really pulled me in. You gotta make you're own goal though, I loaded the mod that added more inter faction conflict, chose one that was on the edge of defeat with just two worlds remaining and sided with them and fought until it was the dominant faction in the universe, then I betrayed them and fought until I was.

Oh. Yeah that mod is trash. Delete it. Personally I find scavenging is the best way to progress, arguably the only way to progress, for colonies, since that's how you get blueprints and other goodies. Dump 3 points into yellow, get scavenger, get that solar perk so you can fly around easily, slap solar shielding on all your ships too. Buy a huge fuelslut ship. Accept planet/exploration missions, try and stack 2 within the same region of space.
Eventually you're going to luck out and get something like the Donut which you can sell for 500k, throw in a bunch of other expensive blueprints and you'll have the 2m you need to take up a planet easily.
