Final Fantasy XIV is the best FF experience to date and probably the best since the golden age of Final Fantasy games. But it's an MMORPG and that turns a lot of people off. That could be a problem 20 years ago, when internet access was still uneven and the genre was new, but online games are far more common and accepted these days, now more than ever.
The trend of gaming is moving increasingly more connected and online. While this does mean greater emphasis on subscriptions, microtransactions, and lootbox monetization models, it doesn't keep a game from having a strong, story-driven experience, like FF14. Nor does it take away from some of the other aspects of a traditional Final Fantasy game, like a massive world to explore or multiple playable jobs and classes. There are still drawbacks to the MMO format, but the FF franchise fits well in it.
So, why does the FF fanbase still struggle to accept FFXIV and other online FF games as mainline? Even FFXV had an online, multiplayer component.
I thought you guys said that FFXIV supports DS4 naively now, but when I go config it the game says it is just a generic wireless controller.

I play FF14 as a singleplayer game by buying a month of game time 1-2 weeks before an expansion launches to clear all the .1 .2 .3 etc. content and practice rotations, and then finish the new expansion in 2-3 weeks, after which I drop the game until the new expansion releases.

The weird thing is, someone could use the free trial to go through everything up to 4.0, then buy the complete edition when it's onsale for less than $20, and that'd come with 30 days free. Pay another $10 for another month max and they'll be able to get through all the 4.X and 5.X series in that time.
Anyone starting now can get four full fledged games, two of which are genuine FF masterpieces, for less than the price of a new entry in the series. People paid more for FFXV, and it's season pass, and it's royal edition, and its Ardyn DLC, and comrades, and the movie.

i don't dislike ff14 because it's an mmo, i dislike it because it's a bad mmo with very little to do in the endgame and what is there is broken up over like five patches.
wow may suck right now but at least the content patches in wow actually have content, not the shit that should have been there from the start of the expansion. i thought wow had a problem with sitting in a city queuing for shit in endgame, jesus christ it's ten times as bad in ff14. there's almost no reason to leave a city ever.
ff14 is legitimately fun to play right up until you finish it, then there's basically nothing to do. all the content's front-loaded, it's like the opposite of wow in that respect. which is great for hooking new players but it's not really that great for retaining them once they've finished.

Like it or not, it's intentionally designed that way with almost no content having any sort of longevity and a shit ton stuff designed to aid new/returning players to catch up. It's made them money all this time and until the game starts dying they aren't changing any of it( other than actually giving you less content every expansion, fuck these hacks)

>the trend of gaming is moving increasingly more connected and online HOLY SHIT YOU DON'T SAY. I NEVER KNEW THAT SO AMAZING >online games are far more common and accepted these days WHAAAT? NO WAAAAY >greater emphasis on microtransactions >emphasis Emphasis is a nice euphemism for "we want to get our money-grubbing hands on everything" Also FPBP

I just don't like MMOs and wish single player games could get the amount of content that their devs pump into their MMO games.

Fine, OP. I'll try it out finally. I'm eagerly awaiting the Crystal Chronicles remaster and this will tide me over until then I guess.

>Spend an entire expansion without the City State leaders and Lyse >Delivers the most 10/10 story and experience since Heavensward >Heavensward did the exact same thing for most of its content
Noticing a pattern, lads.

This. I don't mind that people enjoy FF14 and I'm glad they've found a game, but it's barely a MMORPG. You can't even play with a friend unless both of you have completed the hundreds of hours of singleplayer story.
