The area marked is part of a 3D skybox and is not accessible by the player.

It is a very lazy line where the world simply ends, in a way no natural area would

Even the road simply ends for no reason.
If you were to walk over to it, you would see the end of the world.

I'd say both look pretty good in different ways?

The lightning and character models in the top one make it look worse

Bottom actually looks really good (hopefully not a bullshot but they would've probably done that 1st off no?) hopefully it looks like that on my gamin PC

There are a few indie games that look that good already, so I wouldn't be too shocked if thats how the game looks at release.

This is actually a perfect example of the creative process through the lens of video game hardware.

The top image is what they made unrestrained, look at the basic geometry of the scene, look just how much is going on. In effect it is just a corridor but it doesn't look or feel like that, the pipes give depth and provide the feeling that there is more going on you just can't see it.
Conversely, the bottom image is what happens when QA comes along and says "This won't run on anything but our development systems, fucking fix it you retards".
The pipes are gone and even the non-pipe geometry is simplified, the area is larger but also lesser in a way, the fine detail that makes a location interesting is gone.

It's pointless talking about the distant view since that is subject to LoD culling, instead pay attention to what you've actually lost and imagine that process being applied to the entire goddamn game.

That whole first video was just a bullshot pre-rendered video made to look like gameplay anyway.

also there is no "post rendering" shader. If it's a shader, it's applied during rendering.
