He was pretty bad. Definitely not a worthy successor to the epic hopeman.

He was before case 5

The only logical character in the game. Actively smarter than the MC, but not moralfag enough to give a shit about anything but survival.

Kokichi was a character the writers didn't know what to do with. He was somehow both a manipulator who gets Gonta and Miu killed but then also he was lying because he's really a nice guy pacifist who never wanted to hurt anyone? He's a mess of clashing tropes because the writers tried to make him both a lying mastermind who tries to kill people (and does) but also a dindu nuffin sweet boy who just wanted to save everyone. I liked him most in v3-4 when he's just a mask off psycho, before the game tries to convince me he was actually an angel the whole time.
His plan in v3-5 was also completely retarded, nothing about setting up the murder scene like he did would really make it unsolvable, and it was obvious that it would not affect the outcome or stop the game.
Compare that to Nagito, who had a singular vision throughout DR2, and everything his character does surprises the player but is always in service of his goal. And his final plan in 2-5 actually made sense and would work exactly how he wanted it to; and he basically succeeded had Chiaki not come forward. Nagito's character is so strong his presence is felt in 2-5 without being there; the whole case progresses on "what would Nagito do?" and then the ending of the case is the natural conclusion of his character. With Kokichi it's a mess of "was it a lie??? or was it the truth??? this was my goal... no actually THIS was my goal... actually feel sorry for me I meant no harm!", sounded like a fanfic character when the author wants to make someone a super smart sociopath but also a nice empathetic person at the same time.

He peaked in 3-4, which has some of the best voice acting and twists in the entire series (specifically the class trial, the investigation was pretty boring). However he’s definitely the worst Jerk antagonist of the 3 (thought Byakuya and Nagito are both 10/10 antagonists so)

He peaked at This world is mine - Kokichi Oma and never delivered on this hype.
