Apparently Sony is mad at EA due to Madden being at May Xbox Games Showcase, not only that, apparently EA Access (EA Play) will be bundled with Gamepass.

Why they even would care about EA besides that?
Remember back in 2013, when Xbox botched hard, EA show some help with bundle FIFA for Xbone's launch? yeah EA always help Microsoft in the end, Ubisoft and cd projekt too.
Basically this means that once Game Pass takes off, Sony loses the sports audience. And without that, they have nothing.
That audience will be the first to gravitate to the Game Pass model because it doesn't make sense to spend a bunch of money on updates for the same game year after year.
This may not seem like much NOW, but this is going to kill Playstation in the eyes of the normies. They don't care about TLOU Part II or Final Fantasy VII R, they just want their sportsball. And Game Pass looks like it's going to be a much better deal for that audience.

This is the part I don't get, how hard is was to find some competent indie devs a few years ago and fund their next game? 3-5 AA tier games like Medium would have done just fine. Maybe new Rise/short action warhammer game to show off the graphics.

When you make nothing but a small handful of AAA games, you put in more money then you may get back.
The whole industry has this problem though--everything has to be a huge budgeted "epic" that can only be a smash hit or massive failure, nothing in between.

Key word "competent". I really doubt road trip VN and tranny game from Dontrod will get mainstream appeal. So far they have Wasteland 3 and Medium. Eversomething is very far off, warhammer game is a co-op.
Why didn't they buy Warhorse (Kingdom Come devs) or Piranha Bytes (Gothic/Elex devs) for example? Both studious were acquired not long ago.
They had to do that, because Nintendo controls the low budget and middle market.

EA has the upper hand since sony relies on them for marketing. You can’t show a game’s footage on your platform without a streaming licensing deal. Both advertise during the premier league so this is def gonna sour relations

Yeah, the Attack on Nintendo failed pretty hard. All of the third parties that tried to fuck them over, Squaresoft, Konami, Capcom, EA, Ubisoft have been going downhill for years now. And with TLOU Part II it seems like Sony itself is going down the same path.

I don't particularly care for how Sony is lately, either.
The only companies that haven't destroyed themselves or are at least still trying are Sega, Capcom, and Nintendo.
Even they bought both, COVID will still make them unable to release a game at launch.
They should be happy Gears Tactics and Flight Sim didn't release earlier, and they have timed exclusive for next-gen version Yakuza 7 in western.
downhill in quality for sure but they are making a ton of money.
Capcom is once again going that path if RE3 is something to go by, hopefully the new MH is a GaaS done right.
