Agreed, letting the player talk their way out of that situation was a little bit too much. At least with lonesome road, they added a little bit of choice to the dialogue, so now you could actually fuck it up if you made the wrong decisions, but the damage was already done. Cheating your way out of the final boss fight with a few words, not even having to gather important information first, like in fallout 1, probably made the game worse for most people who did it, not better.

Still a 9/10 game though.

Both of these options should have mandated the presence of various forms of evidence based on what the player has accomplished or explored previously, like the Master in Fallout 1.

There are better ways to do it. Dragon Age Inquisition, despite having very dumbed down RPG elements and no charisma/persuasion stats, has an example.
During the winter palace mission, you have to investigate a somewhat complicated plot with three major players, and if you uncover everything you can BTFO all of them at once rather than pick a side.

Basically, winning with dialogue should also require the player to fulfill some related objectives with which to back up their persuasion.

You can only mess up with Ulysses if you go the path of hunting for info and his tapes. If you have 100 speech you bypass the danger of choosing the wrong option, because every option after [Speech 100] is the correct one

That sounds pretty great, but at least F:NV has the option. I still vividly hate Skyrim for wasting my time with the civil war and forcing me to pick a side, as if I gave any shit at all who was in control.

Honestly he's a disappointing final boss all around.
He's supposedly THE strongest and baddest in all the legion. A guy that was born strong and was slaying fighters in the arena since he was like 10.
Understandably his reputation was probably exaggerated by illiterate low ranking fodder but you still expect somewhat of a challenge.
Then you go there with your level 50 demi-god character and you blow his head off in like 2 shots with the medicine stick. Would it really have been that hard to make him scale with your character level and give him a fucking gun?

I would have given him an unique semi-automatic anti materiel rifle. If you get close he starts using his sword with increased knockdown and poison effect, if you get far he pulls his gun. When he gets low on health he uses an instant healing item that regenerates all his health, not that shitty powder, but you can interrupt him before he do it. Give him health and dr according to player level. There, now he's a real final boss.

It wasn't a matter of morality, the courier accidentally destroyed what Ulysses thought was the budding of a new civilization that was better than both the bear and bull.

Because you failed to find out the whole story:

If you're playing a CHA character and you only pick dialouge choices, you're doing it wrong. CHA also boosts your companions to insane levels, aggravate a bunch of assholes and let your terminator friends mop up for you.

Yeah but it's still an useless stat, companions are already terminator tier even with 1 cha, if you give them good weapons and armor you don't even need to fight anymore. I just use a mod that lets me have 1 companion every 2 point of charisma, to a max of 5 with 10 cha. Like it was in fallout 2. It's even more broken but at least I can enjoy the company of a whole gang roaming around with me at the same time.
