Focus on the sound

More jumpscares and guns that do shit!

What if a funny ghoul jumped at the screen waving his arms and going "GLUAGLUAGLUAGLUAGLUA!"

Try not to lose THE GAME

Don't give any weapons to the player

Whats the bottom left one

Bottom two scared me more than any game.

Don't make it a horror game, go in a completely different direction genre wise and just add in things which fuck with the player in horrific ways. When you know your going into a horror game then your mind is prepared for it even expecting it.

First 3 are just meme-core ebin jumpscare from 2000s, while the last one was something i didn't expect at all at the time i saw it.

Media that exists only to scare is usually dogshit, but that comic was innovative enough to be actually memorable in a good way.

Play Darkwood, we've been over this

or make a horror game and purposely leak fake footage of the monsters/scares to throw people off then have the game hit them with entirely different shit
i don't think you can sell a horror game as a non horror game, there'd be too much backlash from people that feel like they wasted a money on a game they can't finish out of fear

back then when I used to think about the game it was in like an "oh no haha xD" kind of way
anytime I hear about it now I just feel scared and sad because of how simple life was back then and how shitty it is now

what is the bottom right one?

bongdong ghost or something, some korean webcomic with a jumpscare randomly stuffed into it

powerdrill massacre 2

oh I think I remember that now, you scroll down and the pictures move as if it was animated, kind of

Whats bottom left?

make more realistic horror games, with murderers in a realistic setting rather than monsters in a fictional seetting, there is so little of that.

>too much backlash

Good it'll get people to talk about your game, articles of mad journos talking about your game. You can apply Trumps 2016 political campaign to your marketing on the game, more press coverage of your gotcha game leads to people wanting to play it. Of course taking false advertising into account you just have to be vague as all hell as to what your game is and show only the happy fun parts saying

>theres much more to come and we're looking at all genres and adding in somethings that could shock players

Boom no lawsuits.

IIRC the gimmick of that one was a script that prevented you from scrolling away from the jumpscare like most people reflexively do.

this, didnt expect a top down 2d game to scare me

Make a game about OPs mom

yeah, pretty mindfucky. That's the shit that horror needs, something to subvert expectations. Too much horror ends the same way every time. You get caught and killed or jumpscared to game over. If getting caught meant something new and horrible for the player each time I think that would create a better sense. I want games that break the fourth wall, fuck with your saves, your settings, your volume, make the game literally unplayable for minutes at a time. FUCK. WITH. THE. PLAYER.

Shits so boring

This, it’s what makes a lot of the older horror games scary to this day. Take SS2 as an example. While it’s far from being the scariest game out there it’s excellent sound design somehow made brightly lit futuristic hallways have a tense and spooky atmosphere. Silent Hill owes a lot to it’s sound design and the lacklustre sound design of later games made them not scary at all

...

This. It's all about atmosphere. Sounds plays a fucking huge role in this as well as aptly building up dread and a feeling of powerlessness. Offer the player tools but keep them limited and scarce while also pushing the player to push themselves in order to acquire more.

Maze scared me out of the internet for like 2 years, I played it when I was like 7

What was your first screamer/jumpscare? I'm a spic so image related.

all of pig farmer's games are
>walk through a dark room
>ugly man pops out RAGAGAGAGAGAGA

Ghost Car. I watched it when I was 11 and I literally turned up my speakers and leaned in closely.
