I just played 2016 2 months ago and Eternal last month. Eternal is worth every penny but the music transition and amount of music there is in that game sucks when compared to 2016. That is the ONLY thing Eternal got wrong.

I've put over 100 hours into Doom Eternal because it's so fun to replay. I like getting into the flow state and strategizing in real time

Eternal is better than 2016 in all the mechanical departments. 2016 is only better in terms of art style and story. The only major flaw with Eternal's gameplay is the small ammo pools, and even that isn't a huge deal. Eternal is just much more hectic and interesting than 2016's combat.

How do you know that?

Same as 2016 with smooth combat and great aesthetics. Otherwise, very linear levels with fairly forgiving combat; it's a bit more fun to play than 2016 with things like the dash while also being less balanced around it, the demons just can't keep up with you.
For better and worse, these NuDooms are 'Brutal Doom' realized as games.

The guns feel good. The game looks good. I still don't like the focus on arenas, though. Eternal did more to make the combat more complex and everything, but the fact 2016's combat was basic wasn't the problem for me so much as the arena fixation itself, and that's something Eternal ultimately commits to even harder than 2016. But there's Project Warlock, there's Dusk, there's Amid Evil, Wrath and Prodeus are both upcoming, etc. I don't need Doom to cater to me, I guess.

Brutal Doom with shite levels and Doom gameplay is 95% dictated by the level, so nu Doom is 95% shite.

Everything went right. 3rd worlders can't buy it and that's why they are mad.

Pretty much everything about the gameplay, presentation and atmosphere is more of a sidegrade to 2016

Thinking of getting it while it's on sale. 2016 was pretty good, but I preferred the Arcade mode to the main campaign. Based on everything I heard Eternal's gameplay is closer to that if you skip the lore.
