As a kid, I always knew Tails was a boy, just a typical little brother character. Somehow though, I thought Knuckles was a girl way back when he first appeared because of the "long hair". Just thought he was like some tough biker girl who bullies Sonic & Tails and was a bit like Helga from Hey Arnold in that he likes Sonic despite being mean to him.
I know because of this there's some shitty doodle buried in my parents house from a 7 year old me of Knuckles and Sonic kissing and holding hands, while Tails is like "Sonic, no, she's mean!"

It really pisses me these characters never appear again or at least in some form.
