You were asking for gunpowder games and those were decent. AoE 3 had fun campaign, variety of units and factions that were fun to play even in skirmish. Never liked AoE series as a whole because of arcadeish gameplay anyway but this and AoM were fun.
Played EE series and RoN for the specific ages.
Then Empire TW and Napoleon came and enchanted with mods like darth mod or even new one like Napoleonic wars it makes them miles better. Bugs aside games are damn fine especially how they did the whole naval combat for its time.
My sin is that avoided Cossacks series coz a buddy of mine was nagging me to play it as a kid and i've never got around it later. Only recently a year ago i've played the first one and in my opinion its the best classic RTS ever made.
