It was never advertised as such either. Since it's not an open-world game, I don't see how "the world is so empty" is valid criticism. The same way how the empty world in Shadow of the Colossus doesn't take anything away from the game.

I honestlypo think Nier is one of the best games. The shooter minigame was a little tedious throughout the second playthrough, but the story easily kept me going.
The music, story, art style, the mix of genres. Amazing.

I've also never had a game/movie make me cry before, but even two years later i can't go back into the game with getting teary.

I loved it, the philosophy angle was good, the existential dread was great, combat was fun. Butt was nice, story was cool. Characters interesting. Bit boring running back and forth. 9/10, stop being salty

I agree, though I'm pretty teary eyes in general.
To me everything with beautiful music easily gets me emotional, I think especially in games it's one of the most important tools for the story tellers.
I'm not sure how my experience would be if they added some standard Hollywood score on top of the exact same content.
