There just wasn't enough game time or character development to like Gemma. If she had gotten some long story arc like all the other characters did, I probably would like her. Just like I grew to like Bianca in Dragon Quest V because she got the most development.

Depends on how old you consider "modern" to be. I'd argue Dragon Quest VIII is still modern enough. Or Bravely Default, Octopath and a bunch of others.
