It's underwhelming, I'll give you that. All bosses in Doom games are shit, to the point that I'd call 2016 Cyberdemon and Spider Mastermind the best ones in the series.

the problem was that the arena wasn't particularly interesting or well designed, it didn't feel great to move around on and the boss requiring you to look up and take you're eyes off of where you were going constantly is what made the fight kind of meh. it could have been executed better.

Agreed. It would have been better if one or both of the arenas were circular with the boss in the middle imo. The boss fight as it is isn't awful, it's just kind of dull as the culmination of a great game. It's fucking terrible on Nightmare, though. The whole game is kinda shit on Nightmare anyway.

I still don't get why eternal insisted it have other enemies in the boss fight, I get you need to harvest some of the shitters to get ammo, health, and ammo but they already solved that in 2016 where the boss would occasionally drop it and even somewhat did it in eternal, having some random shitters in the fight just makes it tedious

Ideally boss fights, particularily final ones, should involve the player having to draw on the knowledge and expertise they've gained across the game to emerge victorious. And since the game has been almost entirely about fighting mobs of enemies, it makes sense for it to still revolve around that.

Yeah, putting adds in boss fights is a pretty lazy design choice to up the difficulty. They didn't bother me much on Ultra Violence (which is the best balanced and the ideal way to play the game imo), but they certainly made everything much more annoying on Nightmare.

Bosses in every game are the worst.

They could have fixed this fight easily if they gave him a second phase where he gets enraged and does a really bad ass morphing jump/teleport thing and turns into something similar to a Marauder only actually unfair and very power. Nobody would have seen it coming. Everyone would have been surprised and thrilled to have been one-shotted by it. Instead we go this. What other games have done this? I can't even count them all on one hand. Generic 90's boss filler. It was never good then. It wasn't good now. Ambition and budget must have dried up at the end. Just pure lazy and uninspiring.

I was also blueballed by the mechs, although I can understand the devs not wanting it to be a radical gameplay shift to end the game on. Would be cuhrazy tier if they got the mech moving like regular doomguy.
