Gamepads in many ways are terrible because you're integrating the position of your thumb over time...

>Gamepads in many ways are terrible because you're integrating the position of your thumb over time. This not a great human user interface way to do things, its very inprecise. [...] it's fundamentally not a great use interface.
>If you look at something like a mouse, when you're controlling directly your point of view with that, that's a direct 1:1 correlation. That has a lot more value [...]

Its embarrasing that consoles are still using time-based inputs for controlling POVs in games.

Lets see:
Platformers: Keyboard and mouse [BEST] (Dedicated fingers > moving thumbs)
Shooters: Keyboard and mouse [BEST] (Best for movement, aim, precision)
Fighting games: Keyboard [BEST] (Hitbox controller banned)
Rhythm games: Keyboard and mouse [BEST] (Again, dedicated fingers)
Action-adventure: Keyboard and mouse [BEST] (Best for movement and aim)
Role-playing games: Keyboard and mouse [BEST] (Uncontested. Number of bindings required)
Strategy games: Keyboard and mouse [BEST] (Uncontested)
MOBAshit: Keyboard and mouse [BEST] (Uncontested)
Racing: Steering wheel [BEST] (Uncontested)
Sports games: Controller maybe? Don't see why they couldn't work best on K&M to be honest.

Having dedicated fingers for tasks will always, always, ALWAYS be better than moving your thumbs between inputs.

Based. Thumbsticks were a mistake.

mouse+keyboard is awful for your wrists
you're keeping your hands in an unnatural position all day
you'll understand when you hit 30 and are in constant pain

controller is more comfy though

>tfw John will never be your lecturer

>Fighting games: Keyboard [BEST] (Hitbox controller banned)

BZZZZZZT. WRONG

"Story in a game is like story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but its not that important" - John Carmack

Carmack is based.

kayboard fucking sucks for movement

People can easily do that all day for decades, it's called having a job.

I too hate having precise control over movement.

based

>hitbox controller (Basically a keyboard) banned by FGC for being too good
>somehow not the best
ok retard

wrong

Both are viable, mouse and keyboard give you wrist problems over time so they aren't perfect either.

lmao what is this autistic nonsense

>mouse and keyboard give you wrist problems over time so they aren't perfect either.
controllers give carpal tunnel as well. any extended strenuous activity is going to cause issues retard.

Okay Facebook shill

>having to choose
>not having access to both and pull out whatever to play depends on your mood
Peasants

>using a fork to eat soup
literally you

slow console fps shitters wouldn't understand

>Using a scalpel to cut up beef
I can use stupid metaphor as well

Based. John is 300 IQ.

Yeah I can do whatever the fuck I want, sucks for you if you can't

That's fighting games on PC.

He is an amazing computer engineer but a trash game designer. He never should be listened to when talking about game design.

The only argument against keyboard movement is that you can't control the gradual speeding of your movement like you can with a stick, other than that keyboard is still more responsive and gives you greater control, when you have 4 different inputs for directions that you can press independently of the others, instead of having to swing the stick from direction to another
Hell even just lifting your finger off the key is faster and more responsive than lifting your thumb off the stick and waiting it to spring back into neutral position

The benefit of analogue movement is theoretical. For all practical purposes four-directional input with additional mouse-look to change the angle is sufficient - and actually superior to analogue input because it allows you to react faster. It's the same reason why a hitbox beats an arcade stick in terms of speed.

not with proper positioning fag

What is ramen

>having to waste 3 fingers just to move the character around
>not even omnidirectional, just 4

Hot take, but I don't know your credentials on discussing game design and dismissing Carmack
Mind enlightening me?

>The only argument against keyboard movement is that you can't control the gradual speeding of your movement like you can with a stick
It's even better on PC, because you can set the exact speed necessary for silent walking or running. There's no ambiguity.

>Platformers: Keyboard and mouse [BEST] (Dedicated fingers > moving thumbs)
>Role-playing games: Keyboard and mouse [BEST] (Uncontested. Number of bindings required)

Bullshit. Platformers and RPGs are practically built for controllers

>having to waste 4 fingers to hold the controller
Lmao

R E T A R D A L E R T
Please explain how moving your thumbs between buttons is better than having dedicated fingers for each action?
RPG's have to be utterly gutted and gimped to work with a controller.

Why would I want to understand in the first place?

My credentials are not being John "hasn't made a good game almost 30 years" Carmack. That's way more than enough.

when has john ever commented on game design though?

I seen more and more games that recommend controllers on PC and that treat keyboard/mouse as an afterthought and it makes me so happy. Keyboard/mouse are an ergonomic nightmare for games.

If making good games is the standard you're setting here then I assume you've made some
Seeing as he has, I think he still has a leg up on you

He's done it multiple times and every time he sounds retarded.

I directed Metal Gear Solid. You ever heard of Kojima?

>He's done it multiple times and every time he sounds retarded.
And you can't list one retarded thing he's said
I'm glad you concede. Don't talk out of line again.

Why aren't pressure sensitive keyboards a thing? You can't even walk without holding down a seperate button. What a load of shit. Don't understand why anyone uses kb/m aside from try hard competitive shooters. And my wrist hurts after an hour. And you can't lean back in your seat properly. And it's so uncomfortable.

>You ever heard of Kojima
He is an amazing computer engineer but a trash game designer. He is like Carmack to Hideo's Romero

Sounds like your body is just falling apart
Consider some lifestyle changes and get healthy

>You can't even walk without holding down a seperate button.
Having a silent walk button is better than guessing on an analogue stick
>What a load of shit.
Yes, controllers are shit.
>Don't understand why anyone uses kb/m aside from try hard competitive shooters.
Because they're objectively better than controllers.
>And my wrist hurts after an hour.
Some peoples hands hurt using controllers, what's your point?
>And you can't lean back in your seat properly.
>And it's so uncomfortable.
Works for me

Reminder that Carmack and Doom ruined the videogame industry.

Because it would cost a fuck ton to make and would see minimal use

>guy says obvious shit
>SEE GUYS HE SAID THING

what is the point of this thread

Didn't expect such a brainlet take from Carmack. I guess it's true what they say about people getting older
