The dev released an alpha build of a promising voxel game he was working on. The amount that it blew up overwhelmed him so he went radio silent for like 7 fucking years. Comes back with an objectively worse version of the game that he was working on with LESS features and touts it as a 1.0 release. Everyone hates it and the dev disappears again
Thoughts?
So its just not having XP that is the problem?
Absolutely fuckawful game design decisions. The most egregious example is this: your equipment only levels up for the biome it belongs to, so everything drops to level 1 as soon as you cross a border. you also lose your raft and glider and have to reacquire them
Changed up mechanics way too much and made for an overall more bland and generic game with way too much restriction, whereas the original alpha had tons of customization and exploitative elements that this version either reduced or outright removed
>used the same scam twice
How many other developers have been able to do that?
It was a voxel exploration RPG. You picked a class, explored dungeons, found loot you could enchant, fought enemies, levelled up and gained new skills, chose a specialization, found gliders and boats and lanterns, and travelled to new lands with new biomes and towns. It was flavor of the week for a while, but eventually you ran out of stuff to do, unlocked all the skills, tamed every pet, had seen every biome and dungeon.
Literally all it needed was more stuff to do and see. More different dungeon layouts and themes, more items to find, more skills to unlock and choose between. more biomes to visit, more monsters, more quests. The entire basic skeleton of the game was totally finished. It went the opposite route instead and gutted all of that.
Now, you start with all of the skills you're ever going to get, with many of the advanced or specialized ones removed - there's no levelling up any more. Instead, all of the progression is equipment-based. Enemies drop almost nothing worthwhile, though, which is lucky, because their power is randomized which means there's a pretty good chance that the packs of sheep next to wherever you spawn will be essentially invulnerable in your starting gear anyway. Instead, you have to make a beeline for the nearest NPC town and hope you find a quest that tells you where a nearby dungeon is, and then hope you don't get killed on the way there and have to run all the way back. But if you manage that, you might get some equipment to make battles less of a suicide mission, along with a "relic" like a boat or a glider.
But complete all the dungeons, and you can move on to the next land! ...Except as soon as you cross the border, EVERYTHING YOU FUCKING FOUND STOPS WORKING IN THE NEW AREA AND YOU HAVE TO FIND NEW VERSIONS, RELICS AND EQUIPMENT ALIKE. Even your boat when you enter an ocean biome. But you do get a point to level up with. You can spend it on... 1% increased lantern radius. Or 1% glider speed.
So yeah, 10/10 game.
No
>fucked up the world gen where it’s all shared but also completely shit in comparison to the beta
>remove skill tree so your skills never improve
>remove levels so the best stats you’ll get will be based on gear
So you basically to farm enemies by hoping for RNG drops or have friendly NPCS nearby do it if you’re lucky
But wait
>have feature that makes your gear useless out of the region
The only thing you can get to boost yourself are artifacts but they don’t even boost the stats that matter and don’t even work for the stats that they’re supposed to boost in most cases
Meaning after hours of progress you’ll be back to square 1 and already experience all the game has to offer
Artifacts didn’t even work for the boosts
That’s the fucked up part
Capital cities, anyone?
