I honestly cannot understand how fucking rogue-likes have taken off. they’re generally very fun for one playthrough but I just can’t grasp how people find them replayable ad infinitum. they cater to a very particular type of repetitive autism that I can’t wrap my mind around. trophies, badges, unlocks, challenges are all shitty replacements for replay value and they’re a burden on this industry

Most rogue-lites and -likes are replayable by design. You unlock items and characters by playing the game.

There's a replayable charm to it. I think for me it stems to being old and replaying games for the sake of beating high scores when i was a kid

the additional characters are typically not alluring, though. for example, let’s say initial character is melee. unlock is shooter. sure, you clear the same content in a different way. I can understand the differentiation, but as an adult that’s simply not compelling. as far as aesthetics go, simply wanting to play the game as a different “skin” is a child’s stance, that might have been a draw for me in elementary years.

Danny Baranowsky's music is fantastic and part of why SMB and Isaac were good, when he replaced isaac's music in the remake I lost a lot of interest in the game

All great. I love Edmund, I love how he's the antithesis to the modern indie game developer, he doesn't give a shit about social clout, he doesn't give a shit about being progressive, the only thing he cares about is making games that are him and him only. People think that Isaac was edgy and anti-christian, but it's literally just Edmund being himself, and nothing anywhere near as pretentious as people think.

I remember every interview Edmund would do back in 2011-2013 was him ranting about how shit the indie scene had turned out, everybody was just playing some kind of game of who could be the most socially conscious person, he hated it and just wanted to be a weirdo that made honest games and he has stuck to that. Just look at the shit he's making these days, he's making fucking card games, hardly the most profitable choice he could make.

I'll always love Edmund, he's one of my favorite indie developers. His art may not be as polished as some others, but at least it isn't dishonest trash.

Not Zig Forums but I love Four Souls. Only one guy in my gaming group likes it as much as me and it sucks with only two people but I play it when I can and it's a lot of fun.
