The game was designed with mtx since day one. They only implemented it in a patch so they didn't have to put it on the box.

It is on the box though. It directly mentions in-game currency and purchasing it

The single player track payout got boosted last Fall, there are single player challenges for coins. and golden wumpa's give you 200 if you catch them during a race.
