Mario is a pretty uninteresting character...

Mario is a pretty uninteresting character, he has no identifiable personality traits that set him apart form other characters like Wario, Luigi or Daisy. How would you build on Mario to give him more of a personality while also keeping him a good protagonist for the series?

just build on the personality that was given to him in LM3

What's that?

Have him be a bit of a cheeky cunt. I always feel like the way he's portrayed in the RPGs is someone who is a bit of a joker.

He's alright as is, he doesn't need to be interesting. He's a vessel for his more interesting gameplay mechanics, worlds and so on.

mario was raped by bowser and now he's out for revenge with nothing but his flamethrower

tell me you wouldn't hand over your money for a dark and gritty mario game we've all wanted.

He doesn't need it, but as he is he's boring in comparison to other Mario characters. He would benefit from having more of a personality. Even if it's a fairly minor one.

i played that on mfgg dude

bit of a spoiler i guess?
but watch until 6:00

Mario isn't a character he's a mascot, literally meant to be a blank slate, just like Mickey Mouse.
Luigi on the other hand is an actual character with a personality, just like Donald Duck

Make him overconfident and more curious about everything

here's a better version

He is never wrong works hard doesn't show mercy and doesn't afraid of anything

What more is there to add

Mario's a smug cunt like bugs bunny. always wins and humiliates his opponents. hes actually a piece of shit though

thing is, in the main games Mario's personality is built around his desire for Peach.
that is almost a comparison to the personality of a simp but in Party games or spinoffs he's generally a decent guy who likes competitions and doing hero stuff.
he's alright as he is because that spinnoff attitude is also in the mainline Matio games just overshadowed by his ambitions.

Mario has a simple personality, nothing has to be done to his character since it is already established

Even Mickey Mouse is shown to have a personality depending on the story.

If you look at all Mario games and observe Mario’s actions you can kind of get an idea of his personality.
He’s a childish, athletic guy. He’s got a competitive streak that can turn him into kind of an asshole, but doesn’t really hold onto negative emotions or really care about much of anything that has already happened. When he’s not on some adventure or in some kind of competition and there’s nothing to hold his interest he either takes a nap, looks for something to eat, or attempts to find an adventure/competition. He likes to keep himself busy, cares about his little brother, likes animals, and has a crush on Peach.

good analogy but Matio and the Mickey Mouse have personalities, too but you can only observe their actions to get the whole picture.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 did such a great job characterizing Mario for what little screentime he had.

Have him be charismatic and a born leader, but also very jealous when someone steps up to the limelight that isnt him. If Luigi wins in the original mario power tennis for example, Mario already steps on his foot and gets angry at him because he believes he should of won.

He doesn’t just step on his foot he grinds his heel on Luigi’s toe knuckles while staring at him directly in the eyes it’s really fucked up

>Mario is a pretty uninteresting character
that's because in mario's heyday he filled the role of the perpetual hero archetype. he's a silhouette and there's a subtle nod to it in the games and external media. now that it's 2020, he doesn't have to lift much of a finger because he's done all that. mario was a response to all of that and now younger people COULD look at him and see him as a cultural trope like all the stuff that came before him. you know like a knight in shining armor, a firefighter, an EMT or popeye the sailorman or some shit

he's not antiquated and there will always be someone who needs a hero. my idea isn't to persuade you or change your opinion but maybe i'm just a pseud who looks at everything as a familiar shape

Mario does not have that much of a personality because his time as a Soldier in a War whilst handling bombs before he went to the Mushroom Kingdom scarred him

I don't really know what character I'm supposed to be getting from this desu

Give him more drive. Have him do things for his own sake, not just always saving Peach. Allow him to be angry and petty, he likes to win give him a real rivalry with Wario. Also make Wario more Wario-like. Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 should be referenced as much as SMB3 or SMW. Make Mario a hopeless romantic with a weakness for beautiful women, and make Peach jealous when he fawns over another girl.

Make him a jerk who does drugs and gets cucked by bowser

>Mario is a pretty uninteresting character, he has no identifiable personality traits that set him apart form other characters like Wario, Luigi or Daisy.
But he does.
tl;dr, Mario's an excitable manchild, Luigi's a timid manchild (sometimes), Wario's a slobby miser, Daisy's a loudmouth party girl.
It may not be the kind of characterization the fanfic writers want, but it is there.

>Daisy
>having identifiable personality traits
What.

Disney has been playing up Mickey's manic and excitable qualities in the last decade to make him a more comedic character. When they aren't just using him as a mule for merchandise, I mean.

Are you implying Mario is still said to be from Brooklyn? In 2020?
