They had a really distinct sound you can't really get anywhere else and were a good mixture of melodic and heavy with some funny and occasionally cool lyrics.
Hypnotize/Mesmerize weren't great but on the whole they were a good band, it's a shame they broke up but that's how it goes.

I wouldn't say they were truly distinct. They stood out in the mainstream, but they weren't doing anything other bands were doing better and weirder.

If you're gauging it around just the other bands that were big at the same time as them, you're absolutely right. They definitely got the Nu-Metal label unfairly slapped on them. They came out of an underground that had way more distinct stuff, but i suppose that's why those bands never made it like SOAD.
