The update style has its pros and cons. At least it's super easy to catch up and get into relevant content as long as you don't play on Crystal.

It's the base game + first expansion up to lvl 60 totally free. Only thing that still costs money are Stormblood and Shadowbringers.

Yoshida was extremely forward in saying the game will never be F2P, ever. It will be subscription till the moment it is turned off, just like FFXI is still running on a sub.

The Peaks, Fringes and Lochs are pretty fucking boring and bland., but Kugane, Yanxia, Ruby Sea and Azim Steppe are hands down my favorite locations in the whole game.
Sorry user, at most they will extend the free trial to Stormblood. Besides it's an MMO and I don't see poorfags like you begging for WoW to go F2P.

So, it's two entire games free to play, this thread is about it not being free to play, which is partially wrong. Only the latest two expansions cost money to play.
You don't even need to pay for that, when they do free login days you can beat most of the content on that period of time, I only payed two months at the start of shadowbringers and i cleared mostly all of the content, I believe I only payed 9 months since i started playing in 2006
The final two cutscenes of 5.3 actually showed our characters being a lot more animated than previously. Like Thancred catching the bag mid-air while running away. Krile taking a real bite out of the bread. Alisaie's whole thing at the table. Urianger and the cards, G'raha fumbling with his staff, etc. It's got my hopes up we might see more of this in the future.
