They have this weird sort of protagonist complex where they think "everything I do is justified because I'm the good guy and bad things won't happen to me because I'm the good guy". Alternately they're so cynical and corrupt that they expect their enemies to all hesitate and not shoot them because "SURELY A PATRIOTIC RIGHT-WINGER WOULD RESPECT MY RIGHTS".
