Dontnod is pretty dead set on not wanting me to buy their games after Life Is Strange. Like the drama and interpersonal relationships in Life Is Strange were average at best. The super natural elements and puzzles were what was good. Then towards the end of Life Is Strange the puzzles started to just vanish. Now I hear their new games really don't have nay puzzles and no super natural elements that tie to the first one. They missed everything that made their game actually popular with audiences it might not have been popular with IE I don't give a shit about teenage girl drama but I do care about puzzles, mystery solving and very light super natural elements in such a story. Instead they though they were these brilliant story tellers and now seem to be so far up their own asses they cannot be recovered.

I dont get the appeal of these type of games. They're essentially just glorified Blu-Ray menu screens that demand you to press the "Play movie" button a lot in the middle of watching SyFy-tier schlock. Everyone fawns over how "good stories" they have when the stories are actually very stock and players are actually just impressed by the 3D models acting like humans on the screen with motion capture and advanced facial motion cap.

Interaction makes people more invested in sub par stories. I don't really have much to back that up it's something I have learned from years of talking to people about "good" writing in video games. The first 2 episodes of Life is Strange are genuinely good though for that reason. Those two episodes actually had a fair amount of interaction and episode 2 ended with the best "boss fight" that kind of game could have where you have to talk down a girl from killing herself but your time rewind powers aren't working so you have limited attempts to save her. You can use info you got from talking to people or inspecting the enviornment in the earlier parts. This is a low level of "gameplay" but it was enough to get people personal invested in the scene because it made them feel like "they" were talking her down from the edge. It succeeded in doing what a similar scene in a movie couldn't do because in a movie you can't have an optional failure state, you can't have optional conversations or observe optional things in the environment. Sadly they just stopped trying. Everything they have made after that episode has been LESS ambitious and now like you said they pretty much just make movies.
