Being about girls fighting helps sales, but realistically at this point I think its because Takaki never intended SK to go on for this long and needed to come up with something. I think its why with the new SK anime they decided on some Yoma doing nothing wrong or one of them being defeated by the power of love. Never watched the new anime beyond one episode.

I don't know if I've ever seen an official explanation but I always just think that they clashed with the rest of the game too much, tonally. Now I also agree, I like the Yoma specifically because of how different they are, but I can see that maybe it just didn't jive with the rest of what they were trying to do

They were always intended to be a bigger part of the mainline series, but those got sidelined because the spinoffs sold better. Now we have a big fucking pile of stupid spinoffs and only two actual Senran Kagura games, and we'll never get any more of either.
