Can someone please (without memeing) explain to me what the appeal of simulator games are? I've heard so much hype about this flight simulator shit but I find out it's literally just flying around and that's it.

Like, I get it's cool to see your house or something in game, but beyond that, why is everyone pouring so much time into this? Are people really that much of consumers that they buy whatever shit some streamer tells them to play no matter what it is?

It appeals to people who want to fly but don't have the money to afford an actual plane.
If you don't already have interest in what the game's simulating, you won't be interested in the simulator.

It's fun and cozy. Not every game has to be a skinner box with popups, level ups, achievements, stats, hit markers BING BING WAHOO! Some of us can still derive enjoyment from simple shit like this because our brain hasn't been completely fried yet.

Not entirely true. Most of it is AI generated, but they do actively hand-craft specific cities and monuments.

I'm not sure how else you would accomplish this. Hand crafting the entire world is a task beyond video games, you fucking autist.

This shit is the exact opposite of soul. It's barebones flight mechanics over an AI rendered copy of Google Earth. Completely devoid of content or soul.

MSFS isn't really a flight simulator but closer to the Google maps orbitor that other people here meme about, it doesn't model real physics and you miss out on all the fun that is involved in actual flying.

Google DCS or Rise of Flight and download them to see what the appeal of real flight sims are that model advanced physics so you can enjoy pure stick and rudder flying with the possibilities of stalls and spins, dead stick landings, landing without gear or hydraulic leaks, maybe your engine is even on fire

Both sims focus on different things. MSFS is about the actual flight itself (scenery and all) while RoF is more about the physics.

Not when one literally has more advanced flight models than the other. If a flight sim models flight better than another, then flight sim is a better a flight sim, plain and simple. MSFS models the entire world and has an excellent weather system, but for going for half hour flight to enjoy the actual physics of flying? Not so much

Flying seems cool but I don't have the money or time to get a license or a plane. This is the next best thing. Plus just cruising around the sky looking at familiar places from an unfamiliar point of view is relaxing and fun.

MSFS2020 is as much of flight sim as GTAV, in fact that was the whole idea of the game and why it's coming to consoles

There are a lot of modern games with soul. This sure as fuck is not one of them. It doesn't even have a human touch, it was made solely by a machine, it's an AI-produced procedurally generated map based off of satellite data. The flight model is extremely basic and floaty, more or less as simplistic as can be and clearly slapped onto their AI experiment as an after thought. This game is the anti-thesis of soul.

Still more soulful than your AAA tranny games, and your blogpost doesn't change that.
