Ratchet is never portrayed as stupid. Clank is just a lot more smarter. And anyways there are multiple occasions clank lacks the common sense and critical thinking of ratchet.

You know, today I had that realization. Absolutely, it's the same as Mario. I've thought for a while that Mario has been progressively getting more round, soft, corporative and friendly as a product. No place for strange emotions or thoughts, just a theme park attraction that goes through the motions.
Now it has excellent production values, actual fun, and some extent of creativity, but since the New super mario bros era onwards, it's been getting more creatively stale and they've removed the almost all of the "character" from him (looking at 90's and early 00's Mario art and compare with the turbo happy wahoo of today, Bowser getting progressively more goofy and cartoony, etc)

Had that thought for a while, and a similar thought about Ratchet as well, but yeah, if I had to put it into works, they've "Mario'd" Ratchet. It's clear it's been their objective for a while: removing the funky soundtrack, the underground aesthetic, the interesting and defiant character development, instead replacing it for generic chosen one plots, simple characterization for literal babies, shiny visuals and lame jokes. It's like comparing older disney flicks with recent Pixar and Disney vomits, shiny, pretty, entertaining, goes through the motions but no real substance or evokes any thoughts.

The price of appealing to the widest audience is high indeed.
