yeah I'm gonna be honest. Didn't start with nintendo. My first console was actually an Atari 2600. I quickly became a nintendo only player for years though because they made such quality games. Nowadays each year makes me lose more and more faith in them. I mean what the fuck happened to the nintendo I knew? now they're "increasing focus on post launch monetization" and rushing out games? and their consoles are made of fucking shit tier material now? Built my first PC recently and haven't touched my 3DS or switch in months. Really hoping games like MP4 bring back the magic but I know they're gone. They still have great devs but management is just shit now. Guess money always matters more

Honestly? What really happened was them realizing that certain series that they have are "evergreen titles" and focusing on keeping those alive/relevant rather than making/promoting new games. They always did this to some degree, but it ramped up heavily in the Wii U/3DS era and continued into the Switch one. Also, they have sharply turned away from a general or even adult-casual market and heavily are focused on children now. Mario is less a gaming icon and more a children's cartoon character, which is what Nintendo wants him to be.

They did for the early 00s. A lot of it was NoA-directed, and when Fils-Aime took control he put a stop to it really quickly. I'd guess NCL didn't like it either. And to be fair, I remember the GCN being mocked back in the day for being promoted in ads the same way as the PS2/Xbox but having mostly just Mario and Zelda. Thousand Year Door is fondly remembered now, but back in the day it was considered a joke: of course the only really good RPG on the GCN is a Mario one.
