Consider that online censorship of offensive terms is exactly what scummy corporations want.
Corporations realized that dedicated gamers will complain and nitpick at shitty features. Lootboxes? Day one content? DLCs that barely add anything of value? None of these can go through dedicated gamers, so they've decided to market to casuals instead. Casuals who barely play games other than the flavor of the month, casuals whose hobbies do not really include videogame, casuals that will repeatedly fall for the same milking tactics the corporations employ. The casual does not complain about lootboxes, day one content or shitty DLCs, if it's shiny and marketed enough they will eat it up and provide even more money to the developers.
So with that out of the way, how would corporations attract casuals to their game to milk them dry? You've got the marketing to lure them in, now you need to keep them in by controlling the online environment. Casuals get mad and offended at words, they are not just newbies on videogames but also newbies on the internet, they never learned to ignore words on the internet and get a thick skin, their pavlovian response kicks in when someone says nigger, they get mad for the sake of an imaginary someone else, leave the game and give it a bad review, so the words are censored to avoid making them mad, the servers are centralized to be able to control who logs on and what word filters are used, look at what happened to Mordhau and how the scummy "videogame journalists" released several articles lambasting it for not policing its online chat
Casuals are all over the internet and videogames, and corporations are all too happy about all the people they can milk dry of their cash and how they can spend more on advertising to sell a game than on the actual development
