I get it, the word "Prime" is being associated with a certain type of gameplay now. But from a story perspective it doesn't make any sense. The main villain, the living space magic planet Phazon is dead and with its death all Phazon in the universe magically disappeared.
First I thought that Nintendo would again make the same game and just introduce a clone of Phazon or some other bullshit. But this is from a 2015 interview with Kensuke Tanabe:
"The stories of Dark Samus and Phazon are done now," he confirmed, before adding that the series would still focus on other Prime-series elements.
Metroid Prime was all about fighting Phazon! What the hell will this game even be about?
nobody fucking knows user, not even nintendo or retro at this point
Carson Johnson
eh, Metroid prime pinball exists. It's just a sub brand.

Why are Nintendo fans always this anal about plot? None of your fucking franchises has a story. Mario has been doing the exact same thing for 35 years. Zelda has been the same thing almost as long. Metroid will be about going to a planet, spending most of your time in caves, and shooting aliens while you find middles and shit. Things like Phazon are surface coating so it's not literally "go wander caves" just like Zelda has a light coat to make it more than "stop this variation of Ganon" but none of them rely on plot.
Christian Jones
It's a working title. So people know that a fourth mainline Prime title is in development. To distinguish it from spin-offs like Hunters, FF and Pinball. Is that really so hard to understand?
Kevin Martinez
This. Nintendo makes gameplay games with little to no story, instead of movie games. I love it, some don't. To each there own

>But from a story perspective it doesn't make any sense. Maybe because you didn't get the real ending to Metroid Prime 3 and know it ends in a cliffhanger. Sylux is seen chasing Samus at the end, the story ended on a cliffhanger.
Brandon Adams
Brand name recognition is one hell of a drug. Like how Every game is called Soul Calibur while the first game is called Soul Blade/Edge because Namco want to milk it for the rest of time. But even that has the titular sword.
It's really annoying too since all the games (Sans Fed Farce and Hunters) are linked by the appearance of some form of Prime. How do you twist the Prime moniker into a games about shitlux? Even Halo finds ways of still being relevant tot the words Halo even in the games where the rings don't get to nearly fire.
Ryder Morales
Sylux also steals a Metroid in Federation Force’s end. It’s clear he/she is gonna participate in a ruckus in the future
Benjamin Hall
Hunters is set between Prime 1 and 2 though. Prime 3 ties into FF.
Juan Sanders
it's the fourth game in the metroid prime series.
Julian Ramirez
Prime just means 3D, effectively The actual title will be different anyways
Colton Barnes
Prime represents the non-canon timeline of the Metroid Prime games.
Gabriel Adams
You admit that the subtitle "Prime" is likely just symbolic now, and then posted an interview stating that the Phazon arc was done, so what the fuck are you even questioning here?
They literally had no plans and just dropped the fucking title with bigger number to get onions excited. Game is never coming out just like Metroid Dread.
Camden Thompson
Wouldn't prime 4 be the seventh entry in the prime series?
Luke Jackson
Prime = first person 3d metroid non-prime = 2d sidescroller metroid
Evan Gutierrez
based captain obvious.
Michael Taylor
6th unless you also count pinball

>Why is it called Metroid Prime 4?
Because it's the fourth Metroid Prime game, there were three before it, Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime 3 Corruptions, as well as Metroid Prime Hunters which wasn't counted in the main franchise. The number four comes after the number three, which explains why they would go with the title Metroid Prime 4 for the fourth game in the franchise.
>Why is it called Metroid Prime 4? The same reason it's called Metal Gear Solid 2/3/Portable Ops/Peace Walker/V. The same reason it's called Luigi's Mansion 3. The same reason it's called The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening/Majora's Mask. Hell, the same reason it's called baking soda.
Once you establish a name, the original reasoning behind that name doesn't need to continue to hold true. The name carries its own meaning. In this case, it means a 3D first-person Metroid game.
Brody Walker
Because it's still the setting that is directly affected by the existence of Phazon and Metroid Prime/Dark Samus, even after they get wiped out. I think Federation Force set up that there was a scramble and series of desperate moves to replace Phazon with some other bio-enhancement by the Space Pirates, and of course the Federation Force was created after seeing how crazy the Space Pirates were with Phazon. Overall, that means a lot more connective tissue and results in it being a numbered sequel to the subtitle instead of being its own thing (although this isn't 100% apt to say since Other M wasn't properly labeled Fusion 2).
That being said, I really hope they actually focus more on making this the bridge between Prime and Other M/Fusion than just using the namesake to pump out another FPS. The Federation studying metroids and such can be part of the arms race that started in response to the Prime incident, and that could directly lead to the conspiracy and bioweapon research (i.e. Nightmare) that's a major part of the Fusion era.

Hunters was such a cool game. I'd definitely be down with a Prime 4 Online mode, but I also want Retro to spend as much time as possible polishing the campaign. Maybe release it as a separate multiplayer game at a later point?
Aaron Wright
I'd love it even if all they did was take hunters and rerelease the multiplayer on switch, or add it as a sidemode for prime4. Bonus points for adding the prime 3 hunters or new stages but the multiplayer was already so surprisingly good as it is I wonder if any additions would be worth having or would just fuck things up
Tyler Barnes
To be fair though both Luigi's Mansion 2 and 3 keep the general idea. Yeah Hotel is not by definition a Mansion but technically the joke of the series is that Luigi never owned the mansion in 1 to begin with and 3's story is funnily enough more in line with the setup of 1 where Luigi is invited to a place that turns out to be trap.
