Are there any JRPGs that exist that don't have atrocious writing? Point me towards one. (P4 pic only because I've been playing it recently and enjoying its comfy atmosphere despite its shit gameplay and trashy writing)

Final Fantasy 1 on the NES

go get 'em tiger

Ignore the shit memes and jump into yakuza 0.
I've ignored it for ages cuz of obnoxious fans, and it was a mistake.

I've played Yakuza 0 but never really considered it a JRPG even though it has elements of one. If it does count it has the best writing out of any JRPG I've played though. Shame what happened to the Yakuza fanbase though. They're almost annoying as JoJo fans these days.

P5R is a step up from Shitsona 4 Gold

I hear you, i myself am not a jrpg fan because most games have some crazy fantasy setting that just doesnt grab me and persona 4 was the exception.

I mean, not really. That's pretty much been a part-&-parcel fact with japanese media since a decade or two ago. I used to be extremely against dubs and the like but eastern culture has somehow degraded since the 90's while western stuff has snail trailed a bit ahead to where it's overcome the JP stuff simply because of japan's stagnation (or decline, rather) in terms of net gain

I'd recommend TWEWY, but only if you can get it on DS and not one of the remakes. The gameplay for it only really works with the two screen set-up - any of the remakes are immensely below the DS one for that reason.
The writing starts off a little tropey, but that's for a reason and it builds off that into good stuff.

Japanese media seems to have gotten noticeably worse in the 2010s for whatever reason. Too much trend chasing and not enough creativity like there used to be. Japan won't produce a game like Silent Hill 2 or an anime like Texhnolyze or similar types of works ever again because of its current media climate.

I've always heard good things about it, but have never given it a shot for whatever reason.

rent free

Is it really?

FF7 remake

Good joke

Sorry we are looking for games that arent dogshit

Valkyrie Profile

>filtered by goty kino

>time loops
Oh, the game that relies on the single worst trope in time travel fiction for its plot?

Haha no

Time loops can be kino and that's why they're overused. So many writers saw how kino they could be and wanted a piece of the pie.

No.
All Purseowner games have dogshit writing because they’re all made for braindead weeb coomers

Literally no.

Having played persona 3 and some of persona 4, I completely agree. However, I'm sorta interested in Persona 2 but I feel like it will be a big disappointment like Persona 3 was to me. Persona 3 was one of the most dogshit games I remember playing through in recent memory. Thought I'd like it more than Persona 4 but nope. Persona 4 is a more enjoyable experience despite it being very, very flawed.

Shadow Hearts, you fucking plebs

Persona 3 is objectively the best Persona game though.

>Best music overall
>Best characters
>Best setting
>Best story

Sure, the newer games might have added some QOL changes but it’s not THAT much better than 3.

Xenoblade Chronicles 1

You just described me bravely default hmm

Do you mean with that that you want a JRPG without melodrama or what? Tell us what you are specifically after. Themes? Meaningful choices? Genuineness?

Persona 1 and 2 are the best written games in the Persona series but those those games have bad gameplay.

Eh, I like Japanese rural town settings, so I like the setting of P4 better, but I liked the concept of the dark hour though. The story in 3 was pretty dogshit with boring writing and not much happening for most of it. The most value it has is regurgitating its theme over and over again. I liked Junpei's character but that's about it. I felt nothing for my player character by the end of it and I was tired of the game preaching philosophy I learned by myself when I was about 15 years old or something.

>JRPG
>good writing
lmao

I want to play them but wish I could just have a VN version of it so I wouldn't have to put up with tedious gameplay. I would watch a youtube movie of it, but I would probably find it hard to stay engaged since I easily get distracted when on YouTube.

That's kind of the point of my original post. I'm just genuinely curious if there happens to be a single rare exception or something.

>best music
completely subjective
>best setting
p5 with nothing to do in it? fucking kek
