If a combat encounter is easy, just let it play out, if a combat encounter is tough, it becomes a tactical challenge.

This is better than turn-based combat on almost every level.
For smaller battles you can issue your commands and have things play out quickly. For larger battles you can issue new commands as the scenario unfolds.
Turn-based on the other hand is a long sequence of unskippable attack animations and reactions. Larger battles become a slog with every unit slowly taking their turn in sequence.
